When a tricky marketing goes wrong.

Well as some of you know we’ve had some losses lately between my ex-gf losing one of her sisters to a long illness as well as the loss of our 11 year old golden Molly not that long ago. And we’ve gotten lots of kind notes expressing condolences for the lost of Jackie’s sister as well as our beloved pet Molly. In addition to that we’ve received some live plants, flowers and even a few gift baskets.

Well, the other day I was talking to the ex about our kids & other stuff in general when she said “Oh by the way”

The other day she found a notice on the front step that read “we tried to deliver your gift basket but you weren’t home”. Then it went on to say “Please call and well try to deliver it again”. Thinking someone is either sending a late bereavement basket or an early holiday basket she calls the number on the notice.

So the lady on the other end thanks her for calling back and goes on to try to set up a time to deliver the gift basket and says that “we’re a carpet cleaning service and along with the basket we’d like to offer to clean two rooms for half price with the cleaning of three other rooms”.

When the ex tries to explain that she isn’t interested and to call back after the new year the lady on the phone tries to insist that she’s getting a great deal in preparation for the holidays and that they won’t be offering the price next year.

That’s when the ex started to get mad - but kept her cool and decided to turn the tables & put them on the spot. That’s when she thanked the lady for the kind offer then went on to tell the lady that the only reason she called was because she thought the "gift basket" was from someone expressing their sorrow for our losses (explaining the details) and how if she’d of known it was a sales ploy she wouldn’t of called.

According to Jackie the lady was totally horrified on the other end and couldn’t express how sorry she was for our losses & intruding and that they’d never bother us again.

When the ex hung up the phone she couldn’t help but laugh knowing she'd done good. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Now there’s one marketing ploy that seemed like a good idea at the time that totally back fired and it’s a good bet that they’ll be rethinking the next time.

hmmmmm... isn't that borderline "false" advertising? or "bait & switch" tactics? aren't there rules/regulations/laws against that sort of thing?

I mean, after all, aren't they luring people into calling them under false pretenses?

I'm sure there’s a grey area.

Locally I've seen folks advertise carpet cleaning for dang near nothing, but when the guy shows up it's really a vacuum salesman. That one really PO'ed me.

But in the case above - while underhanded, I guess it's ok if they give you the gift they offered without purchasing anything.

Just another way for the danged salesman to get his foot in the door to try to sell you something you didn't want in the first place!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif

Well, Ahem, (cough) (cough), False Pretenses?? Look at it this way, aren't Police Officers luring people into an act that they might avoid when they pose as ladies of the night, just to make arrests. Not that I disapprove, but really!? Misleading is the same whatever uniform your wearing. It should be illegal for everyone. Ahhh… errr... What? Boy did you take a wrong turn or what.

Sorry I fail to see any parallel between some sleazy sales approach and a proven law enforcement tactic for reducing crime. I mean the Johns & hookers chose to break the law and the cops are exploiting that illicit criminal behavior to catch them. Whereas all we’re doing is opening our mail and answering our own freakin’ telephone.

I mean it ain’t like we’re out trolling the streets late at night looking for “carpet cleaning” when some nasty old worn-out tart walks up and offers to clean our carpets for us.

Had a guy come to our door one chilly night offering free hot chocolate.
Turned out to be a Kurby Salesman.
Had to threaten to call the police (actually got them on the phone) before he'd leave.
NEVER again. I do NOT deal with door to door salesmen.

Not me...

I have huge amounts of fun with these folks.

Unfortunatly, they don't show up any more /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

I carry Merlyn to the door. He's an all black domestic short-hair'd feline. Has a LOT of Siamese in 'im... and he don't cotton to strangers. Quite an impression, apparently. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

The barks from my house drive most away, before they even get near.

Ohhh... I learned the hard way with those folks not to humor them at all. Once you lend the slightest ear to them, they want to be your best bud and keep coming back to share the gospel with you. The last time they came back to visit I was talking with someone in the Caribbean on my ham radio (longest distance contact I'd ever made!) when they came knocking and I had to drop the conversation. So I told them I was just talking to God on the radio, and he said I should tell them to go away and never come back! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif It worked!

I've been angry and humored over the years, I used to get about 2 calls a day from stock brokers, which was laughable, 'cause I had no money to invest.

A few years ago, I turned the tables on the caller, it occurred to me to ask them if they needed an architect...

Well, Ive gotten pretty good at getting their goat, about 1/2 of them hang up on me. The more they press, the more I press right back, insisting that they need my services somehow, no matter how small. Are you a homeowner? If they say no, I ask, would you like to be? If they say yes, I ask, have you considered an addition? Oh, it gets right funny, the wife and kids will stop what they're doing and start snickering at the pressure I'm putting on the people.

One of the last guys got really angry and yelled, I'm trying to sell something to you, I don't want to buy anything and hung up, while I was laughing at his rant! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

That's great!

I usually tell 'em I'm busy and insist they give me a number to call them back... they don't have that in their scripts....

But this sounds sooo much better!

I am still waiting for JWs to show up so that I can ask them, "If I join, what number will I be?

Well, I'll just comment one more time and then it's done. It all depends on how you look at it. Most police departments are under staffed, some very under staffed. Most police departments have numerous cases that are unsolved. I look at it this way, the tax payers money could be spent more wisely by devoting more time chasing crooks, murders, rapists, drunks on the highway and child molesters than devoting that time trying to stop the worlds oldest profession. Which, will never happen. If they happen to arrive on a situation like this, then thats another story, but to provoke it is wasting money. I am an avid supporter of the police. Two of my best friends are retired state troopers and I am friends with many more through them. I just don't agree on how some of the money is spent.

I agree!! Well said!! We should perhaps concentrate on crimes that prey on victims FIRST, and then when a significant dent is made on them we could address victimless crimes!!

All I have to say is: It's a durn good thing we've got a government wot keeps passin' laws to protect us from ourselves. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif

Legislatin' morality seems to be the easiest of proposals to pass thru Congress and the hardest ones to enforce.

I think they call that 'feel good legislation' because they feel good that they did something. Regardless of whether or not it is effective.
