Keep the flak jackets on. We're STILL 'discussing' the overdrive bit and now we're back on discussing wheels. Dahubby wants minilites on Binabox, I want to keep the painted wires. What's the dif between minilites and superlites (was looking at a vendor's website and the price seems good (NOT that I'm giving on this)

https://www.packracingproducts.com/page_wheels.html

Isn't there another wheel similar to minilites? I thought it started with a "P."

Panasports - they're Minilite replicas.

The good thing about the Minilite types is that they're strong and maintenance-free. Classic, aggressive look to them as well.

Mickey, that's what you had on that TR3, right? What 'brand' were they, because that DID look awesome on that 'white' car.

Bought 'em on sale from TRF - at the time they had the best price. Can't remember what I paid for 'em (slept since then!), but they had the look I wanted, and it was in the budget at the time.

So are they minilites, superlites, Panasports (I can't tell much difference between the 3, if any) TRF? A vendor here? Pack Racing Products seems to have good prices on the superlites, but I haven't really price-checked.

IF we go with a dark color car, I'd go for the chrome wires, but IF we go with a lighter car, I don't want chrome wheels.

Weren't 'moon's with the aluminum back and holes going around standard on this age car?

Mine weren't Panasports - they may have been Superlites. But they all look very much alike. There are several manufacturers, and I was more interested in the look than brand name. I trust the folks at TRF to sell quality stuff, and haven't been disappointed. The wheels I bought were of high quality, and they balanced out fine at the tire shop.

What's TRF Mickey?

Sorry - The Roadster Factory.

As I understand it, you're planning to go with a vintage-esque paint/interior color scheme for Binabox right? If so, I'd stick with the painted wires, especially since you already have them. As long as they're straight and true, they'd be fine, and would add to the vintage look. Just my 2 cents /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I agree Josh. But I've learned over 30some years to pick my battles carefully. I've made the decision on color, if he has his heart set on minilites...I may relent.

If you are going with Minilite replicas, try and stay with the Panasport brand. They are of a true racing quality and even "look" better that the other similar brands. A friend tried to save a few bucks and bought the other brand, they look cheesey next to the real Panasport. A good thing is to find a used set of Pans and have them painted to a colour of your choice. I've seen several sets at races that were painted, very sharp looking. They have more depth and contour than others and are really tough under use and abuse.

ah, but center-lock mini-lites (or mini-lite replicas) are uber pimp! errrmmm... they look extra special cool IMO. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Now, to shoeing those babies, I have been through more than a few tyres on my Triumphs over the years and I have to say that I think I have settled on the perfect tyre for me: Michelin Hydroedge. Stick like glue on hot and dry, fantastic traction on wet and have a very wide, flat road-surface edge. I have 100,000 miles on my Tahoe's Michelins and know my roadster will never need new shoes, unless it is from age. Plus, they tend to be a slight bit lower in height than others in the same size. I run 205/70R-15.

What are centerlock minilites?

they attatch with a center lock like the wire wheels. Look at your wires- they aren't held on with 4 or 5 lug nuts like your Toyota- they have one really big nut in the middle that either has ears or a big octogon that you put a wrench on and then you loosen and tighten with a hammer. Makes you look cool when you can change a tire really fast.

Those are the Minilite style wheels but designed to fit on the splined hubs that you use for wire wheels. Best of both worlds JB, Minilites for regular use, throw on the wires for shows! That was a good suggestion!

The center lock ones? They look the same? I had my heart set on wires with winged knockoffs.

I can't see us (i.e., dahubby) buying 2 sets of tires and keeping one set around. And I can't see him swapping out wheels whenever I get an itch to change.

I switch rims and tyres twice a year, when I take off the alloys and substitute snows on steel rimsand then back again in the spring on two cars that we own, so I think it's normal. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Otherwise you will have the expense of switching the hubs for standard ones to bolt the regular wheels to. Maybe Tony or someone equally conversant with the cars can confirm this, but isn't the rear axle different for wire wheel cars?

Something's different, I think it's the rear axle, not sure though.
