TR6 What year TR6 did NOT have a differential oil drai

I have a 1971 that I'm getting back into drivable condition and I can't seem to find the drain plug.

It may just be an over abundance of dirt and grin combined with an under-abundance of brains.

Thanks!

The drain plug is at the bottom. Some people like to use the diff. as a jacking point. If you can't find it, it may have been sheared off.

Re: What year TR6 did NOT have a differential oil

The drain plug was deleted with the TR4... guess some shiny-pants accountant in Coventry found it would save 5 pence.

Perhaps it was added back later in the TR production... couldn't say. If you have one I would think it would be real obvious.

Re: What year TR6 did NOT have a differential oil

I have 2 diffs for my irs TR4a, both have just the one plug which is up on the side of the diff and used to fill and drain, by vacuum/siphon.

The back covers of my diffs are alloy, so I drilled and tapped a drain plug in the one that's on the car now. (Can't remember whether the diff of my TR6 was the same; I don't remember ever changing the fluid on that car!)
Simon.

Re: What year TR6 did NOT have a differential oil

If you want a drain plug on a TR6 Diff, you will need to drill and tap one, just like TFR did when they rebuilt mine. Otherwise, the only way to "drain" it is to open it up. Suction draining won't remove all the oil and sludge.

Re: What year TR6 did NOT have a differential oil

heh, wish I'd known this before I spend an hour underneath the TR last weekend looking for the dang thing....Finally gave up, I've gotta bring the car in to get the 'clunk' checked so I'll have them do the diffy oil too.

Re: What year TR6 did NOT have a differential oil

I was wrong. I remembered seeing one on my car (must have been the TR3) and referenced a catalog that showed one. Just looked under the TR6 and it wasn't there.

Geo,

The early TR4s had 'em, didn't they? At mine does.

Re: What year TR6 did NOT have a differential oil

Perhaps they were deleted somewhere along the way. CT36536 does not have a drain.

BTW -- What a bonehead thing to omit. I suppose there could be a situation where that plug would strike something but I think there are plenty of other bits that are likely to bottom out first.

Re: What year TR6 did NOT have a differential oil

My rear sway bar mounts act as skid plates, saving my exhaust from scraping which in turn would save the differential.

I agree... It doesn't really make a lot of sense. I'm sure glad I have one, as I've certainly used it. Being able easily drain and replace the differential fluid is a great piece of mind on a 40+ year old car.
