what were you doing

Working as a dish washer in a cafeteria, saving for my down payment on my '72 Mallard Green Spitfire Mark IV with a dove gray interior, which I put a 1,000 dollars down on in about October 1972 at 17 years old...
The cost of the car, with a hard top was 3012.00.

Congratulations on a long and wonderful marriage! (It seems we don't get to say that often enough these days) and Dave, tell Annie, "Happy Birthday" from Dave and Terri!

This day in 1972 saw me as a member of AAVS, looking to contribute to th' "library" of images of DoD.

...a faint hope as it happens.

Bloody 'ell.... almost th' 50th post before my 20K-ith.

No matter.

"Diesel DO" !!!

I was seven years old. Probably riding my bike, and complaining about my sister and brother being a bother.

I wasn't even an itch in my Dad's pants.

Protecting Canada from Communism.

You should get those 50 knocked out today, don't you think, Doc?

I was 19 and an electrician's apprentice at the USVA hospital in Salem, VA. I delayed going to college for a couple of years to learn a trade. I did the dirty work for the journeymen electricians, and I learned a lot. Great buncha guys, I recall. It was hard work, but good pay.

Also, in the Fall of '72 I had just purchased my first Triumph, a lovely, '69 BRG GT6+ and was proudly driving it all over the place. I loved that car, one of my favorites.

Very good times, those. I wish I had that GT6 again . . .

I was on my own and working for a lawn care company during the day plus playing keyboards in a bar band at night to pay my way through Engineering college. Well worth it though. Great memories and a great career.

Sitting in Gitmo with the second battalion, eighth marines, waiting for Fidel (he never came).

Spent the summer before in Europe as the sole mechanic for a two car Formula Three Team(International Racing Services). Came back before the season ended as my father had been in a lifethreatening auto accident.

So was enrolled at the local community college studying business admin, econ, etc...in the evening. Daytime working at a 14 car line dealership, managing the diagnostic center(EconoAutoCenter) in Riverside, California.

I had been married to my wife for a year and 6 months! We were probably still up around the Glen in '72 for the GP which was run on the 8th.(Her first time to an F1 GP!).

Holy Cow!!! After thinking about the dates, I was also at the Glen for that F1 race!!! And, it was my future wife's first F1 race also!!!

That's funny!

I ~missed~ the Glen F-1 races from '70 to '73. Air Force. Also missed the LAST F-1 race. Had a Buick take the left front corner off the GTV as we were leaving to attend. Two blocks from the house. gah. Still have th' tickets here someplace. :wall:

I was one year out of University, working my first job
and driving my first new car- a dark green Vega GT

--loving life!!

I was there too!

That makes Three of us that were there.

Funny story: We were at the Glen a few years ago with a couple our age who'd been married about 10 years (2nd time around for both). We were having dinner and drinks at The Seneca Lodge (*the* place to eat at Watkins Glen).
The husband and I are talking and he tells me that the first time he was at The Glen was for the '68 Formula One race.
I laught and tell him I was at that event too!
Then his wife laughts and tells him *she* was at that event too...apparently with a bunch of her college girlfriends.
I guess neither of them had ever discussed this before.
At which point I remember that me and my two pals ran into a gang of college girls from New Jersey at that '68 event and.......Whoops! Better not go there!

We all had a good laught about it.

Oh, congrats on 36 years or marriage!
