What the muck is this? Ewwww yuck continued.

Why is one of the float retaining screws silver & the other black /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif Just kidding. I might have to send the other set of HIF4's to you for rebuilding but Curto is only about a 20 minute drive from me. Your's look awesome and I hope you don't mind if I post them.

never fails... every time I see a set of carbs that Hap has rebuilt, I feel like a kid that has just been caught looking at a dirty magazine!
 
Doug, I first plastic media blast the dashpots, but that's mostly to clean the parts I don't polish. I make sure they are good and clean to start with with hot water and soap, then I got a liitle handle I made out of a couple of 1/2" bolt to hold on to the dashpot, I chuck them up in the drill press, stotchbrite them (burgundy), then wet sand them with 400 grit sandpaper, then hot water and soap wash them again, then go to the buffer pad I have one in a bench grinder, and use the white rouge, normally polish them about 5 minute each to get those results, you can get obcessed with easy enough and even make them shinier than the one I'm showing here, then buff them off real good with a clean, soft cloth.
 
Back to carb cleaner in a can for a minute. When you use it make sure there is good ventilation and beware the carb cleaner will eventually eat through the bottom of the can. Even though it will take a while. Although it is great stuff it can be nasty. We use it a lot ofr Hollys on the race car.

Thanks for telling us how you polish the dash pots. Another use for my lathe.
 
Thanks Hap. Next time I pull the carbs off my cars for a major rebuild I'm going to give that a try.

LLAngus, that's a good point about the lifespan of the metal cans. I believe what's going on is that something in the carb cleaner (at least the Gunk brand) seems to collect and pool little bits of moisture. I never see the rust on the sides of the can, it's always on the bottom. I always have a can of the dip cleaner on my work bench. Since I've been surprised by those rust holes before, my dip can is always inside an outer, cheap, plastic paint bucket.

I build about 50 sets of SUs a year along with all the other MG rebuilding I do, I get all my carb parts from Joe Curto, that's my buddy, I put early model butterflies on everything, as most old butterflies get a wear pattern right beside the shaft on the linkage side and can cause binding if you re-use them, HS2s are the worst about this, HIF4s are the best as for not wearing the shaft and butterfly.

I was actually admiring that picture on your web site before you posted it here. Nice site, btw. So, yeah - the pots look shiny, but how did you get the bodies so pretty? Walnut shell blasting? Do you cad-plate the hardware bits?
 
OK. New gaskets are in for the float bowls. All I need to do is clean 'em up and hope they are still good. The extra set of carbs I had were in great shape so I'm hoping for plug & play......although no gas. Alas I wait.. yet again.
