What the muck is this? Ewwww yuck continued.

Do the carbs get hot enough (after the engine is shut down, obviously) to warrant silver-soldering them?

They don't get that hot. For reference, consider how much rubber and plastic is in/on the carbs and other engine parts.

If they did, wouldn't it be hot enough to boil the gas? I've known of carbs getting that hot but there was no heat shield behind them.

Engine de-greaser sucks! Autozone Did not have it. Jeani is on the way to Wally mart to see if they have it. A small ultrasonic would be awesome right now.

You're going to need to get a can of the old style carburetor dip it cleaner. Most parts stores have on their shelves or can get from their warehouse in 4 hours the gallon size can. Larger sizes are avaiable that usually have a "parts bucket" that you can put the parts in, leave overnight, rinse off and air blowclean. The smaller can you can safetywire each large item(body, cover plate, etc) and hang in the solvent. Need to keep it in the solvent a good four hours from the look of the crud present.

I have the EGR valves in my HIFs along with the full complement of EGR equipment the car came with in 72, pump, gulp valve and all, and I couldn't ask for it to run any better. Lots of pep, no bucking, jerking and will run 70 MPH all day long and I get great gas mileage. I still can't see why everyone wants to, (strip), the engine of the original equipment when it's going to be used as a street machine. Amazing! Absolutely amazing. Sorry for running on. JMHO. PJ

True enough!

I see alot of the soldered poppet valves in my SU carb rebuilding, it always amuses me, why not just replace with new solid butterflies, they are $15.00 or less a piece, that's what I do on all my carb rebuilds.

PJ - what an absolutely gorgeous engine compartment...I can see why your car runs so nicely!!

Expediency? Non-valved replacements in-hand would be desireable. It was simply a means to an end, qiuck-n-dirty. Since these are gonna be on the bench for a while, it pro'lly makes more sense to replace 'em.

I just went thru this thread and can't find ANY reference to stripping the engine of existing equipment... did I miss something?

Expediency true also cost for now. I might just leave them as they came off a low mileage car or I'll solder and if I go for the full rebuild on them one day, I'll have JC replace them.

You have a picture of the other side of the engine? I wanna see the EGR valves and how they're hooked up between the Intake and Exhaust manifolds.

So I went to NAPA and picked up a gallon can of carb cleaner with a parts basket. First off guy starts saying "What those things have SU's, Strombergs?...pieces of crap. They never work" I smile and tell him "You know you're right" maybe I won't buy your parts cleaner.

Anyway it's $50 a gallon.

Another question is this. Is there a difference between parts cleaner & carb cleaner. I can get a 5 gallon can of parts cleaner for $105. If I work my way through the gallon can, I'll get the parts cleaner for $105 to keep refilling my gallon.

Lastly instructions state to remove plastic & rubber. If I dip the whole carb do I have to worry about anything, floats or washer maybe?

Carb cleaner is what you want.

Thanks Tony.

I heard not to submerge them unless you are planning on totally rebuilding them? Is this true?

I would suggest that is true Vping.

About time for new stuff in any case I should think.

that's what I thought when I read the post of $50, but I hadn't my receipt to verify what it cost me. I just knew I didn't spend $50 on the gallon can of Gunk carb cleaner.

Also: plastic... jets, floats, damper caps, mebbe a Viton tip on the needle 'n seat... strip 'em down and do it right... you'll need to be familiar with 'em anyway. And you'll need to visually inspect it all too.

Don't wanna see any "SU Troubles" threads for lack of thoroughness. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

My thoughts exactly -- '69 B, all emissions gear intact & functioning, could not ask for it to run better!
