Correct, Steve. I left the adapter/threads out of the pic on purpose to more
clearly show the angle drive is not fitting into the speedo gear drive.

I have received info from the seller of the overdrive I will post below. Thanks.
 
I have asked for a bit more clarity from the overdrive rebuilder (in Australia) after explaining my concerns. I mentioned: "Could this be a Volvo overdrive?"

I have copied his response as follows:

"Dennis, IT is NOT a Volvo overdrive, We do not have Volvos here, the angle drive for the "A" overdrive and the Stag automatic trans had a larger square section than the "J" overdrive speedo drive. You may pick up an angle drive off a Spitfire/ Dolomite/ Stag "J" , they all will fit.

Sounds easy enough, just buy a Spitfire/Dolomite/Stag J angle drive and it
should work.

Now I asked him what speedo cable do I use.
 
Well, he is definitely mistaken about at least one point : TR6 and Stag both use the SAME angle drive for both A-type and J-type ODs. Stanpart 120694.

And while I'm much less familiar with the Stag automatics (there were two different ones), my books show them not using an angle drive at all.

He might be right about there being no Volvos in Australia ... but it seems odd they would have a web site about cars that don't exist there :

This page even has a photo of a J-type from a Volvo

But the wrong speedo gear didn't necessarily come from a Volvo; there are other makes that also use J-types and might also have wrong gears.

I would suggest you start by measuring the input to your angle drive with calipers or similar. It should be just slightly less than .125" across the flats. (Mine ranges from .120" to .123", depending on where you measure; likely due to a small amount of damage/bend.)

If you don't have a dial or digital caliper, I suggest you should get one. ENCO sells an entirely adequate 6" "4-way" dial caliper for $16, currently on sale for $14.

who is trying and sharing where he is at than not. It's cool, your input is

LOL, thanks 2Wrench, I am many things, shrinking violet is not one of them.

I would like to see what the final answer is on this question, as I am putting an overdrive in my own car.

I've got to agree with Randall. The missing cover flange will make up the difference. This is the same picture that I posted before and you need the cover that bolts to the transmission, before you install the angle drive.
