ahh yes, I remember that thingy, it is some kind of a torsion stabilizer. I took mine offof my '75, but I would torque it based on the diameter of the rod.
It's part of the safety system. There to keep the engine in the car in event of a collision I believe. Tighten it enough so that the engine can't pull entirely out of its mounts and you should be fine.
Think I'll pull it off. If involved in a accident, motor-in-car is the least of my worries. I'm getting a weird, cyclic osilation vibration which seems to be at engine speed through the car. Similar to a dry bad u joint or motor mount. I'll pull it off as it seems to help transfer this vibration to the car.
On a Morris Minor, there is a steel cable tying the trans to the chassis AND a steel rod tying the head to the firewall (with the classically British name "anti-judder support". Apparently Morris designers were very concerned about the engine/trans/staying put or excessive "juddering". I never put any of that back on. But if my car suddenly starts "juddering", I'll think about it.
