What is this thing??

ok, so I found the thermostat (thank to you guys).it has a hose to the top and a bigger hose to the bottom of the radiator. The whole thing is probably empty so I will fill. But here's another question: I realized the reservoir has two area to attach a hose. One on the top right and one kinda below that to the front. The one on the front was attached to the hose which goes to the thrmostat/radiator. There was NOTHING on the other one which points towards the air filter....any ideas where it goes and what attached to it? I don;t think it is juust an air vent???

BJ, the upper hose on the tank (right below the cap) is the overflow hose. It just comes out and hangs straight down, and lets any overflow run onto the ground. You don't really <u>need</u> a hose on it, but it keeps things a lot tidier if it does burp any coolant out.

Excellent. Is there a special type of hose for coolant> Would a fuel line hose that is the same size work for the overflow?

Yep, it will end and you will then be a compatant LBC owner operator.

The way you are going it will not take long.

Well, I've been playing with these little cars since I was a teenager & I'm gonna start my Social Security next year to give you an idea of how long that is....I don't know if it ever ends, but it does slow down as you get things sorted out & drive...

Don't do like me though & buy so many you can't drive them all - then it really never ends!

OK gusy here's what happened. I put the reservoir back on, connected the hose to the thermostat. Then I opened the top of the thermostat cause I was having difficulty figuring how to get it out of there. So, I opened the big giant bolt on top and began slowly pouring in prestone 50/50. It took what seemed liek about 1.2 a gallon or some more because it must have been bone dry apparently. I watched it overflow into the reservoir and filled that about 1/2 way. It ight be a little more than half. Anyway, I tried to start the littl ebgger (hadn't started it in a few days) and she refuses to start. Yea, she keeps trying but no luck. Anyway, the gas was kinda low. I had this problem once before and after sitting it for two days it just started magically. Not sure if this will be the case again but I hope so. Would filling it in this manner cause the car not to start? Perhaps the thermostat is messed up and refusing to let the car start? Is that a ridiculous comment?
 
BJ will make it. The learning curve is just a bit tough at first when you are starting at near zero.

Hi BJ, I guess I'm a little late joining in, but I found what helps in filling a dry 1500 cooling system is to take the upper hose of the heater box off (that's the big black box in front of the battery), and that burps out most of the air pocket. Without doing that you might have a lot of air trapped in the block.

Another thing I'd pass along since mine was pretty rusty when I got it is that the heater return pipe can clog easily, leading to some strange symptoms. The automatic choke's water jacket and the heater both connect to a T fitting at the rear of the engine block, and that T is attached to a pipe on the right side of the engine which leads to the water pump. If you get enough rusty sludge like mine did, that T can clog up, and the choke won't work right at all because it won't get any heat. A coat hanger wire can clear out the tube, but thought I'd mention it too.
 
Al good advice - all completly unrelated to why it won't start.....so, we've got 2 separate problems to tackle.

(Oh, & I'll use that bolt on top of the thermostat housing as a way to 'burp' the system also, just like you did!)
