My uncles used to use something similar to hang their deer for skinning and butchering. They placed a metal rod with a hook at each end through the hind legs of the deer to spread the carcass while it hung from the ceiling.
 
I'm thinking you got it - a "stretcher". Used to spread open the carcass.
 
Ya got it guys. It is an old home made gambrel, was used for butchering on my grandparents farm. Also found a home made flail when we were cleaning the place up.

Geniac it is!

I had one a zillion years ago - loved designing circuits, etc. and watching it "think". Still have one today - a "double Geniac" all complete with original manuals.

a leg-mounted corn cutter?
 
You got it... and up to a few years ago, a more modern version was still being made!

I can imagine that walking down a uneven corn row with one of those on each leg swinging each step hard enough to slice corn stalks would develop some SERIOUS leg muscles...or some serious arm muscles from stopping yourself just short of a face plant when an angry stalk trips you up!
