What is it?

Here's another one. It's obvious what it is - the question is:

What was the application - i.e. what specifically was it used for?

(The overall height is about 8 inches, weight about 10 lbs.)

Milk house cooler fluid? Looks like the compressor on grand dads milk cooler in the milk house. PJ
 
I think it creates a vacuum to operate milk machines.
 
Not farm related, and nothing that would be used in a typical shop. But ,interestingly, the company that made it also makes equipment that powers grinders and creates a vacuum - for the same specialized application.
 
Compressor to inflate them newfangled pneumatic tires? :jester:
 
Fridge compressor? and/or part of a Maytag washing machine engine
