So I'm at work, just talking with the guys, and the next thing I know I'm at the bank, then on the way to a coworkers house with another coworker with a truck and trailer, then somehow I wound up with a 1984 Porsche 944 in my garage.
It's got a wiring issue (All the smoke came out of some wires) and it's otherwise not perfect, but it was at a "get it out of my yard " price, and I couldn't pass it up.
Pics as soon as I can get them uploaded. :encouragement:

oh boy......

Could sell it as a racer. You could do PCA events but:

A. It's expensive
B. Not your type of crowd.

There's a local autocross group.........

We're at The Glen right now. Will be rolling out though Horseheads tomorrow. Some of the best car deals I have ever found have come to me the same way. Will you still talk to us after you join the PCA? (LOL.....I had dinner with a bunch of PCA guys tonight).

Some pics as promised

Here's some of the carnage to the harness.

That dash was in it when I got it..........

That dash doesn't look like FahrvergnĂĽgen to me... but I'm sure it will when you get it repaired.

I doubt I'll be joining any Porsche clubs. But I may be able to tag along on some of the local sports car club events. I may be denied entrance into the PCA anyhow, I mean, the 944 does share garage space with a BMW 318is...( I believe that rivalry is along the same lines if not stronger than the MG vs. Triumph one). Throw in the VW, and it seems I should find the "Germancarforum"...... nah!

Everyone is identifying the wheels as BBS, and when I first saw the pic of it from my friend, I said the same. But the center-caps identify them as AREs They are in really decent shape, and will clean up nicely with a bit of work. I really like how they look. If I couldn't have the stock rims, these would be on the top of my list for customs.
I hope there is not a whole lot wrong with the car. I have to repair the wiring first, then I can get it running and assess the rest of it. I don't even dare hook up the battery yet. The brakes work, but I'm not sure how well. The clutch pedal does nothing, so I bet the slave cylinder is leaky. tires look good, not too old, and plenty of tread. I'm not sure about anything else.
Story is my friends son bought it and drove it home (about a 40 mile trip) then while working on it to get it to pass inspection he replaced the motor for the pop-up headlights, turned on the switch, and POOF! all the smoke came out of the motor wires! from the switch to the motor. He bought a used harness from ebay (It's the wrong one I've noticed) and started taking apart the dash to do the swap but lost interest. that is how it's been sitting since last year.
I put in a lowball price last spring to my friend and said "if it doesn't sell, and you need it out of your yard, I can give you this much in cash." So here it is 6 months later, and he decided it needed to leave.
I can't wait to hear it run (I hope?!)

Just finished a patch job on a pal's old Pontiac Sunbird. He had an under-hood fire and it melted some of the main harness wiring. Nasty. Replaced the burned section one-at-a-time, solder and heat-shrink. Taped all up after testing and no more smoke came out.

The same repair kit can be used on P-car wiring as used on V-car wiring.
They don't like to tell you that, as the P-car part number is allegedly different, and costs a whole lot more.
Tests have shown the actual material is identical.

Cut strips of duct tape, separate the wires, lay the duct tape along each individual wire and wrap.

Usually works until something even more terminal happens..like the engine blows up, or the glove box latch fails.

Ben,

You're just trying to make me feel better - right?
I've looked at 944's (& even 924's),but always managed
to walk away.
Nial, funny that you mention Watkins Glen & Porsches-
After having dinner at Senecalodge,I talked to a 911 owner,
& told him that i went to the track, but they wouldn't let me in.
He said that he would have let me come in as one of his "pit crew".
On the other hand,we used to run a hillclimb near here -
the "Lord Ellis Hillclimb",from '73 - '85.The Porsche owners wouldn't
give you the time of day - unless you drove a Porsche.
I realized that I never wanted to own a Porsche - if I had to
treat people like that.
