Towed home a 1970 VW type 3 fastback this afternoon. Pretty crusty underneath, sunburnt dark green paint, and it doesn't run (Bosch Fuel injection)
Gotta get the Bently manual with the wiring diagram of the FI in it. I'm in the dark.
Pics soon. weather was nasty today for pictures.

Focus, Banjo, focus!

Ben,

We need to talk....,or call each other before we
pick up another vehicle.
On a serious note,I saw one of those that a guy I knew
bought brand new in the early '70's - Burnt Orange color, with pin-
striping,& chrome reversed VW wheels on it.
I can still see it,in my mind, after all these years.

Except it didn't start out as burnt orange. That came later....courtesy of the Bosch Fuel Injection?

~EXACTLY!~

Right on Dad!

Ben, ditch that crap. I think my uncle has ther FACTORY dual Solex set up for a type III.

Yeah, the Type 3 is a pretty neat buggy but that particular fuel injection is usually considered to be junk. At least, it will always be more trouble that a replacement carb or two.

Come on now fellas, it is D jetronic, as fitted to plenty of other cars, the Pre HE XJS, and series 2 XJ12s come to mind.In the bottom of the distributor is a set of "trigger points" that fire the injectors Remove and carefully clean them and put them back. Replace every single rubber hose in the fuel system. (Use fuel injection hose!!!). Some of the components are hard ish to find tho.. Get the Bentley manual, and be patient, and they will usually run just fine.

The solexs have their issues as well The choke heating coils can burn out and the last I checked are NLS. Not the same as Beetle ones, and most of the carbed type 3s were 6 volt. Bus carbs from a type 4 powered bus can I believe be made to work.

I has a squareback for several years, and loved it. Mine has the solexs' had been converted before I bought it.I had a header, and occasionally ran it with just a stinger on road trips. Plenty of power that way.

Hehehe.. Bill, Keep me informed about those carbs. I may be interested. right now I'm going to try and see if the FI will work. Currently without the Bentley manual, so I'm going all Sherlock Holmes on it. Tonight I spent some time at the fuel pump. It wouldn't activate, even if I jumped across the high amp side of the relay. Come to find out it was unplugged. Plugged it in , and the new pump is bad. Dug out the old one, tested it, and swapped it in. will work from the relay now, but the fuel flow back at the engine is pathetic. I think there is a blockage somewhere, or the old pump is wore out. More playing is necessary. I will be replacing all the fuel line as the old stuff is rock hard.
Tomorrow night is class, so no more playing till later in the week. I hope to hear it run before too long.
I may swap to carbs if only to eliminate any solid state control devices from the car. On a buggy like that I prefer simple mechanical things, not simple antique electronics. I'm sure I can make it work fine. We'll see. I just feel like It's got a fuel system made by Coleco.

Good choice Banjo,
like this except this is a '73.
One thing to watch for is the voltage regulator located on the opposite side to the battery under the rear seat, if it is clicking change it. Correct voltage is important on these. damhikt.
also replace all the vacuum lines.

My bro had the squareback sedan model with the fuel injection. It gave him years of great service and great gas mileage to boot. Plus he's 6ft. 4 and fit just fine.

Depends. Lots of water and garbage in the fuel, injectors. Pump, Filter is probably plugged. Heat (air cooled get hot? You betcha) fuel lines, wiring, plug ends, oh, and Jesse.....how many of them Jags got scrapped because the FI quit? Seen a lot of them parked around here for that reason.

Ben, that stuff was crap when new. If restoring, then yes. Just a driver NO WAY!

More VW's burned to the ground 'cause of that system than anything else. Look on ebay, IIRC, there is a DGV kit for it. All you need is the plenum. I'm sure you can find someone around here who wants to ditch a DGV.

If you just want to see how it runs, I once ran a Z off of a propane bottle by just sticking the hose in the intake. You gotta play with the throttle to get it @ the right spot but it works. Gas in a windex bottle works too. Keep an exstinguisher handy.

Sorta like "here, hold my beer and watch this"?

Willie, I love the color on that fastie. Nice stance, and I like the roof rack.I may keep that in mind. All fuel lines will be replaced, I'm gonna play with the parts I have for now, but once I need to buy new parts for a fuel system, it's likely I'll spend it on a carb conversion.

Thanks Ben,it is my son's car that is the original colour although it was repainted last year and kept the same colour. It is automatic and injected. The roof rack came from the US and we drove to Buffalo to pick it up at the greyhound terminal and then have to explain to the customs why we were only 30 mins in the US. The stance took us about half a day to do,suspension is all on splines
