What have I done?

Manifold pressure sensors can be a problem.
This is a very standard type of fuel injection (speed-density) that first saw light in the 50's on a !Buick! The Mercedes 450SE/SL comes to mind also.
Vacuum leaks can be a problem, and as said fuel hoses, also the throttle switch should be adjusted properly. It uses a positive displacement fuel pump and a pressure regulator. The fuel flow isn't so important as long as the pump can build up the pressure necessary. There was an internal switching for the fuel pump, but it's not strictly necessary. Rusty injectors are a problem and corroded injector electrical connections.
Good luck with it. One of my first challenges was getting one of these engines squeezed into a Baja Bug. (Carbs are the easy way out)
 
Got a book at the shop. We just tore the CIS injection system from a Turbo 924 and put in a system from a early model SAAB, pretty easy conversion... Pick a part also has an old Sirroco and a MK1 Cabby for parts.
 
Update so far. I can run the pump manually and get plenty of fuel to the engine, but the control box is never sending the signal to run the pump. More investigating is required. I now have a pretty good set of tec notes on the Bosch D-jet injection. including a wiring diagram. so I'm slowly working through it to see whats wrong.
I finally got enough battery juice to turn it over the other night, and even dumping some fuel down the intake didn't produce a pop. So I checked for spark. none at the plugs, plenty off the coil wire. A quick check of the dizzy cap shows the incorrect one installed. Got the right one ordered. I should have it tomorrow. I'm hoping to have it running at least momentarily this weekend.
 
make sure the plastic tit on the points that rides on the dizzy shaft didn't break off (my son's did) def no spark then.
 
Got spark. The new dizzy cap is noticeably shorter than the old one. Now my spritz of fuel down it's throat produces a satisfying few seconds of run time.
I fixed a few other wiring issues, and finally cracked open the "Atari" box that controls the FI system. I found a transistor that was fitted with a foam rubber ring around its leads. the foam held moisture, and the legs were no longer. a short session at my soldering station and new leads are on. that got me control over the fuel pump relay! yea! but I still have no injector pulse. Further investigation required!
I'm getting closer.

Did that Doc. Had the dizzy out yesterday. Although I have to admit I have not tested them for a positive confirmation that they are working, and I'm suspicious of the alignment of the timing.
Had to do family stuff today, and have not as of yet messed with it yet since my post. gonna go spend some time out there soon.
 
Years ago, I bought a Squareback in nice shape.
Since I got it for a song anyway, I gave it to my Dad (he needed a set of wheels at the time).

But we found that even though it ran pretty good, the thing had low compression in one cylinder.....and as a result it failed our yearly New Jersey emissions test.

So Dad pulled the injector wire on the "dead" cylinder and it passed! I think he was able to do that for 3 or 4 years.

I thought that I had a "VW Factory Options" catalog,but turned
out to be from 1972.

All wires test fine. contact points are working (And a further check of timing shows all OK), starter signal is good, all temp sensors test good, power and ground to box OK, injector wiring all tests fine, no corrosion in connectors. All that said, still no injector pulse. I think it may have to do with the "burnt electronics" smell that is present in the control box.
I'm strongly guessing a new box will fix the issue, but I'm also very skeptical of the reliability of this 40 year old "Atari" on a daily driver. I'm currently on the search for a carb setup. If you got a line on a set of Solexes Bill send me a PM.

Unk says ran good when removed ( 30 years ago) Three carbs, two dual port intake manifolds and linkage $150 plus shipping. Lemme know.
 
Box emptied. I had no idea it was that full.
