Speakin' of grits... a local place has a dish with shrimp, garlic and grits in a cream based sauce to die for. Ambrosia, I tell ya!

Been waiting for this type of reply - no one likes grits. Everyone likes what you need to add to grits to make it palatable. (If you know the story Stone Soup (Story) Same principle. I'd be real happy with shrimp and garlic in a cream based sauce. :yesnod:

PS Zucchini is the same - everyone likes what zucchini goes with.

If I ever make even near your hovel we are going directly to the joint with the shrimp, garlic, grits in the cream sauce. Yesss!

Spending time overseas, I have had the pleasure of sampling many dishes. Most have been OK but a Vietnamese dipping sauce called Mum-rook, is fermented shrimp and sugar cooked all day at a low heat.
Would smell and taste like a fresh pile of dog sh*t someone stepped in and dragged it into the house. BAD BAD Stuff!

Years ago, when I was in Engineering school, I helped a fellow student (from Taiwan) put new ball joints and tie rod ends on a Ford Maverick that some fly-by-night dealer had stuck him with. He had asked me if I knew a good place to take his car because it "drove funny."

Anyway, to repay me for helping him, he and his wife invited us to dinner. Most everything was great (I had warned him ahead of time of my aversion to sea food). But then, after dinner, he broke out the special treat: a 1000 Year Old Egg, or so it is called. To be polite I took a piece. To this day, if I think too long about it I throw up a little in my mouth.

The look alone of a 1000 year old egg is enough to go run and hide...

All of this talk about grits made me NEED a bowl of grits & fried eggs! (I am out of Spam at the moment :frown: )

That's why I limit my eggs to no more than 150 - 200 years... you want it fresh don't you?

...and I love all of those things even if I am a "Southerner" (from Los Angeles!!)

Ditto.

Put me on the list for most seafood <span style="font-style: italic">except</span> really mild fried fish (if it has a "fishy" taste I won't touch it), and Lobster. Sushi is also at the top of the list, along with revolting stuff like "gumbo", coffee, and beer.

Well, now I need to 'fess up. VietNam in general was NOT a culinary paradise. The ~other~ "sauce" to rival Mum-rook is Nook-mam. Fermented fish. feh.

Now the Thai folk on the third hand... I'd go back there in an eyeblink! Just to EAT my way across the country. Night and day difference and they <span style="font-style: italic">revere</span> cats, they don't eat them. Dogs, well, not so much.

Every so often, on my drive in on I-40 to work, I see an older Chevy Blazer with a bumber sticker that reads: "Cat - The other white meat."

Hey, is that the Blazer Bill's wife locked the keys in? :jester:

Don't forget about the Mangda (<span style="font-weight: bold">very large</span> water bugs) that the Thais also love. We had a local national that took care of the generators at our communications center that used to catch them at night and fry them on the exhaust manifold. I've eaten them chopped up in khoa pad (fried rice). You know, just like chicken!

One dish meals, as in stews, goulash, Chicken Alfredo. etc, etc. A big thick T Bone steak fits well at times. I don't care for French food, mainly because of the richness of it. Even though I'm of English decent, Italian food is my favorite overall! Those Italian lady's have some of the best recipes in the world! Man I'm getting hungry! Sushi??? I don't eat raw fish! I can't even stand to watch someone who does!

One more: I don't do MENUDO!

~Yes, I've tried it.~

:iagree: Or pepperpot!

I NEVER eat liver. That includes Pate, beef liver, chicken liver, any liver. I eat goat cheese because so many salads and such are made with the stuff and I can handle the taste but am not fond of it and the revolting deep muskiness is rather mild. BUT... now that I have read this thread from stem to stern and have seen how many of you are missing out on the enjoyment of foods that I love... I am going to make the attempt to ingest some LIVER AND ONIONS in order to see whether I can glean some pleasure from the experience. [Not that I am going to run right out and get some!].... I will report back.
