My first real rock concert was in the Philadelphia Spectrum in December l968.
Techically, the event was called the Quaker City Jazz Festival.
It starred The Grateful Dead(their first Spectrum concert....they did over 50 there)
Also, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf and Sly & Family Stone (plus others). Creedance Clearwater was supposed to be there too but they cancelled.
I remember I was an undergrad at Trenton State College and I had just met this girl who had a nice Mustang. I convinced her to go to that concert with me and (of course) I drove her car. It was a really nice Forest Green '66 with disk brakes and the optional 225 HP, 289 V8.
We had a great time at the concert; I'd say "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". being the highlight.
So long ago.....I have no idea what that girl's name was.
I'll actually be in Philadelphia for the next few days and I'll see the Spectrum. They're knocking it down soon. Progress, I guess.
I've seen The Who, The Moody Blues, Eagles, Beach Boys, Heart, Jethro Tull, John Denvwer (!), Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd and others I can't recall right now. Some great concerts but The Who was probably the best.
My favourite non-rock stuff I've seen live was Albert King, Winton Marcellus and Pinetop Perkins.
Before the Spectrum concert, I'd seen Bruce Springsteen play live in various little New Jersey shore clubs before he was ever famous......my old friend Gil was in the original band. I was *really* going to see Gil and not Bruce! Gil is still pals with both Bruce and me (I guess that's two degrees of separation)
Going back farther: I'd seen Frankie Valley and The Four Seasons live around '64 (as part of a YMCA camp event). That was a music concert but not really be a *rock* concert in my view.
Frankie Valley's uncle, Bill Castelluccio (that was Frankie's real last name) was a fellow teacher (physics) and also a good friend of mine when I taught high school in the early 70s. I ate lunch with Bill almost every day for about 5 years. Frankie's daughter attended that high school and sometimes she'd come over to talk to us. Nice girl. Bill Castelluccio was a great friend of Denton Cooley, the heart surgeon (but I never got to meet Dr. Cooley).
All these degrees of separation.....
