Welding Exhaust

I am considering welding the joint between the muffler and the tailpipes to eliminate the clamps and seal them perminently. If I need to reomve the exhaust I will still be able to disconect the muffler to downpipe joint.

the system is a new stainless steel Falcon brand from Moss.

Before I do this i thought it would be wise to ask the forum if there is a reason not to do it.

Any thoughts opinions an insight will be appriciated

My only thought is that, once welded, it may make it more difficult to replace a part of the exhaust system that gets torn off or the part that remains when you go over that "speed bump" a little too briskly. Don't ask me how I know that.

It also means that if you need to access anything in the rear suspension/axle you've just made the job alot bigger.

I assume the exhaust has a "lifetime" guarantee if it is stainless?? If you weld it and there is a problem later it might spoil the g'tee.
I am just testing the g'tee on my stainless exhaust for the 100. It came from AH Spares and the flexible part has started to unwind. Have just sent it back.More news later

The exhaust system has a liftime warranty and not sure I want to void it.
What type of clamps are the best to seal the joint and allow disasembly in the future.
Any opinions on moss clamps shown in the catalog?
Is there a need for paste "sealer" at the joint?

Leaky tops/hoods,leaking windscreens, leaking engines, leaking trunks/boots, leaking transmissions and overdrives heck, why not leaking exhaust too?
Oh, I forgot leaky diffs and brakes too.

I would consider using the "Mikalor" type exhaust clamps. Far superior to the standard U clamp & they don't indent the pipe. See attached pic.

Kevin,
I welded the pipe as you said and used the Mikalor type clamps at the downpipe. I used a mig welder with SS wire. Worked real well, I'm very happy with it. I figure, even if I have to cut it to remove it someday, I still have the welder to weld it back up.

Hi Curtis,IMOP those so called flex joints aren't. If you experience the same problem with the replacement unit I would suggest you replace the wound tubes with a set of SS bellows type flex joints from JC Whitney.I specified JCW as they are the most cost effective supplier I know of.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Keoke, Not having seen these joints I can't quite picture how it would work.Would I cut out the flexi part and weld in the JCW part? Are there some pictures on a site somewhere?

Kevin, All kidding around aside, I installed a stainless steel exhaust on my bn7 and feel the clamps Moss provided are enough with out welding. Went on easy, seems real sturdy... (keep in mind if you want to access the seat track the muffler is there) Bob G

Hi Kevin,
If you do decide to MIG weld the pipes, get some tri-mix gas for stainless. The bead will turn out much nicer.

Attached is a pic. There is a bellows inside the braid. Much better than the "old style" flex.

The nice thing about the Mikalor type is that they do not indent the pipe so you can slide the them apart when needed. The Moss clamps make a dent into both pipes and kind of bond them together like a lock and key. I also used the Moss exhaust cement just to be sure there were no leaks.

Yes Curtis, just cut out the original flex tubing, weld the new flex joint to the down pipe and use clamps to fit them to the muffler side. I see Dave came up with a pik-ture of them and they can be obtained in different lengths.--- Fwiw---Keoke

Thanks for that guys. I'll have to see what AH spares come up with first. Hoping they will replace the downpipe without question.
