Welding Exhaust

Re: welding exhaust

Keoke--

After I installed new rear springs and gained back an inch or so of ground clearance I had a fellow cut off the stubby pipe for my then-side exhaust and weld on a new pipe taking it back to the rear.

After--and only after--the job was done did I learn that arc-welding is not good for electronic distributors or alternators and that I should have at the very least turned off the ground switch. No apparent harm was done to either the Mallory Unilite or alternator, but in any case I pass this along.

Re: welding exhaust

Hi Michael, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif
I just welded (MIG) a bracket on a neighbor’s Healey. Turning off the battery switch seemed to be enough to protect the electrics. Well, he drove away anyway and he hasn’t been banging on my door.
