Weber DCOE question

Bayless said:
Well a pair of SUs looks pretty cool too IMHO.

Amen. Too much carb is not optimal.
The HS4s I run now are fantastic at WOT but
just too much carb to have nice street manners.
Even after expert tuning there is a compromise.
Lean 'em enough to have nice manners around town
and they lack at WOT.
Mind you this is a 1380 with cam, ported head,
headers, alloy flywheel etc. and the HS4s are
still too much carb for the street.
That 40DCOE is even larger by a bit compared.
I'm going back to my HIF6 for now as it performs
flawlessly. I really do prefer the look of twin SUs however.
Hap is putting me a little something together
in the HS2s but it might be a bit before they are ready.
It only takes a few minutes to swap intakes with carbs
so I plan on keeping the HS4s for track days where
WOT is the name of the game.

I'm sure results vary and due to the modified nature
of my engine my observations are specific to my
set up only.
I think the twin SU is tops for looks. IMHO
Here's pics of both the HIF6 and the HS4s as installed
on Mimi.
Take it for what it's worth.

:iagree: They just look really good and they are right. My old 190SL had twin DCOEs though and I have to admit that I loved them at the time.

Bill don't want to hijack this thread by why are solex's unnecessary?

Well, all my cars have been daily drivers, to include that Datsun. It had the twin Hitachi SU setup, which (once I got it sorted) ran very well.

I came across a dual Solex setup on a wrecked car, and naturally just had to have it. So I went for it.

And as I said, that setup was lovely to look at, sounded awesome, and ran great. But was it necessary? Well, no, not really. Not on a daily driver. But I sure loved 'em.

:yesnod:

Okay, i get it, was misunderstanding you - i thought you were implying you didn't like solex's and since the vauxhall has them and since i've never used them before, i was concerned. Thanks for clarifying.

I think a single HIF6/HIF44 is the best solution. Easy to set up and tune, no sync issues and more carb than twin HS2's. As I understand it, your maximum throat is the largest single diameter of the carb. So, 2 HS2's is still only 1.25", not the sum of the two. I put together a highly tuned engine with an APT ported head and it runs phenomenal with this setup.

I actually have that book, pretty intense reading in some aspects. Things may have changed anyhow, now for my birthday I might buy myself a 1969 Chevelle :smile:I will find out tomorrow. Then the bugeye may have to go away, as I have only a one car garage

Already had a 69, was my first car. Still have dreams of it. And its a car that is being sold for little compared to what its worth due to the wife selling it as the husband passed away. A darn good investment, especially compared to what British cars are going for.

Good that you have Vizard; he knows his stuff.

I understand about the Chevelle. I like the A-Bodies too. I had a '69 GTO. Here she is with the Datsun 2000 I mentioned earlier:

Man, I just love cars.

 Ya THINK?!?!

I recall seein' that pic before, Bill. That kind of dichotomy sticks in this pea brane.

You're obviously one of us.

I'm sorry to hear that you suffer from the same affliction as I.

But we must simply find a way to soldier on, despite our afflictions.

I do it by spending too much cash on cars. And bikes.

Here's my other current money-vacuum, in case you've not seen it before:

SWEET!!!

My youth contained Moto Guzzi, Ducati and Binelli... Horsemits (SWMBO) long ago invoked Newton's Unwritten Law #1: "Entropy don't ride two wheels!"

I had to "settle" for Alfas and Loti. :smirk:

I would rather have the alum head.

I like them, too.

And the one with the twin Webers I posted earlier is particularly fun, being a crossflow design. Here's another view:

Looks like a tidy set up to me. Lovely.

I should add that particular head is a 7-port design. Really interesting potential. However, as you can see, in a Midget it can make messing with the dizzy a little tight...

Vizard mentions this type of head in Tuning The A-Series on pages 239/240.

I knew a guy in Germany who was talking about using one with an injection system. Don't know how that idea panned out, as I lost touch with him after I returned to the States. (I was Army back then; they reassigned me to Fort Campbell)

If you're one of those that love the WOT world then here’s how to through the gas to it,
pedal to the metal!!!!

See, this is the kind of thread that always gets me going, and ends up costing me money. I should simply say to myself: "No. Don't pay any attention. Don't even look". But of course, I always do.

Okay. Here's, for me, what you really want in an A-Series, once you have embraced your insanity and you just don't care any more.

For those of you who are like me, heed my advice:

NO. DON'T PAY ANY ATTENTION. DON'T EVEN LOOK.

Well back to that Chevelle. I drove it and looked it over yesterday, and its basically a show car. The undercarriage is spotless, as is the rest of the car. $12k for it, which is pretty cheap. But if I but it, its going to be my driver. And I stayed up most of the night thinking about that. Its too clean of a car to do anything with but garage it and take it out on nice days. Driving it in the rain on a regular basis seems like it would just be wrong. So I may skip it and get a beater truck so I have more money to put into the bugeye.

For all the Vizard lovers (and what A-series guy isn't?) check out his A series lecture on Youtube. In several parts accessible from the vid below:
