No kidding, I had a cat that I caught one time with both paws on the door knob to our front door furiously trying to turn it.
I guess he had seen us do it so often to let him outside in the morning that he knew that was what you did to open the door he just couldn't get a good grip on the door knob.

Our cat (long since gone) didn't open doors. But our front door has a brick ledge at waist height. She would jump up onto that and press the doorbell button to get in. You're right Doc, clever kitties.
My cat has figured out sliding doors. He would constantly pry open (or try to pry open) a pocket door to an area of the house where construction was going on. He managed to find his way outside a couple of times, and then realized that he was out of his element...
I've also had the wonderful experience of having that little buggar lock me out. I went outside for something, and upon returning, I noticed he was at the sliding glass door standing on his hinds looking at the locking mechanism. When he noticed me he coming, he quickly sat down as if to act like nothing was going on. When I attempted to pull the glass door open, I found it was locked :| Good thing I had my keys in my pocket...
