I believe the looser then normal fan belt is to preserve the generator. Pulled too tight it puts stress on the rear bushings and will wear prematurely. I obviously can't hear your noise but I would think it would take a very loose belt to make the kinda noise that would concern me. Now if you have a alternator conversion then by all means tighten her up and hopefully in a few days of driving your ok.
