It's getting very damp around the Cedar Valley. Waterloo and Cedar Falls have had on and off evacuation plans in effect and this morning I found out that St. Luke's ( one of our two large hospitals) is having power problems.

This weather is getting seriously bad. I'm sure by now most of you have heard about the the deaths of 4 boy scouts in western Iowa during last night's tornado. If not:

That was a tragedy with the deaths and injuries of those at the Scout camp. Been seeing the reports of Iowa on the news all day.

We are getting nailed again today. Flooding is getting worse and three interstate highways are now closed because of flooding. Some counties are pretty much totally closed. Two tornadoes at this time northeast of us, one went through where my oldest daughter lives and we are waiting to hear from her.

This is getting nuts, my other daughter just called and said there is a tornado in their area. They were on their way home and decided to stop and stay at a friends until it passes. I think it is going to be a long night.
 
Still a ton more raining coming down, over the same flooded areas.

Well, a good deal of downtown CR is now under water. All of the downtown Cedar River bridges are closed. Curfews, evacuations, and water restrictions are happening. This is getting worse by the hour.
 
Well, what a night. We had 4 tornado watches within 15 miles of the house at one time. They would drop down and go back up. Seems they finally dissipated with out causing much damage.
Can't believe the rain. Green county has 100% of the roads flooded. Grant county is washed out. The Interstate roads are all blocked at one place or another. There are about 100 dams in the state that are in trouble and being watched. Rivers and lakes above flood stage all over south central Wisconsin. Several towns completely flooded and evacuated. We are having a thunder storm with very strong lightning right now and it looks like it will rain all through the night.

One of the saddest things and something that will effect a lot of people not just Wisconsinites is the enormous amount of crops that have been totally destroyed. And that damage is through several states, not just here.

However, we are very grateful that we and ours are fine.

One interesting thing and I am going to bed, been a long day.

In the Wisconsin Dells they have a couple fleets of old Army ducks they use for tour rides. These are amphibious wheeled transport vehicles made between 1940 and 1942 for the war.

Baraboo, a town several miles south of the Dells flooded and they drove the ducks down the highway to Baraboo where they rescued a bunch of people trapped in the flood.
 
This morning the news programs are also showing the problems in Iowa. Hope Boneidle and Baz are OK. They are getting hit too. It is just amazing how widespread this has been.

The Interstate is closed for about 100 miles north from Madison and a section is closed going towards Milwaukee. Most side roads through that area are also closed. People from Minnesota and Illinois are being warned to stay out of Wisconsin and that is is nearly impossible to travel through the state.

The great news is that here in Wisconsin there have been no deaths and few injuries. Many homes totally lost though. One of the problems for the home owners is that many were not in flood plain areas so flood insurance was denied them.

It looks like we will get a little more rain this weekend but then a few dry days with some sunshine at least the first days of next week.
 
Just this minute heard that the waters are rising at the rate of 2"/hour in Cedar Rapids!!!! :eeek:
 
Yeah. It's not a pretty picture. We're dry, of course. Mechanicsville doesn't have any bodies of water, so except for basement flooding, we're okay.

The annoying (but relatively minor) problems for everyone in the area will start soon: interrrupted supply chains, inability to go from point a to point b except by 20 mile detours. The poor flood victims will probably be able to assess the damage to their property middle of next week.

Despite this, I think the CR/IC area is pretty lucky: I haven't heard of any fatalities so far.
