Vixen 2500 Rear Uprights - Rear Bearing Seals

I am rebuilding a set of rear uprights for a Vixen 2500.

I have been able to glean some information…. I believe the bearings are two sets of TIMKEN 1988 & 1922 (per side).

Some old documentation I found seems to show that the seal is a VXI4008 (or is it VX14008)? I can’t read the copy of the copy to be sure.

I also need to know what bushing and sleeve goes at the top of the upright.

Anyone have any better information than what I was able to find? Thanks for your help!

If you don’t have access to the proper equipment needed, I would not take on the project.
You will need a lathe to make the distance tube between the bearings and a press to name a few.
 
I’ve got the equipment… I think…

Got a heavy duty press, and a couple nice lathes…

Just made this hub…

Original hubs are very weak. Nice work on that one. Be careful removing them from the quill shaft…they usually come off with a big boom.
Watch out for damage to the quill shaft threads and nuts. Would have the quill magnafluxed before doing much.
It can sometimes be a bit of work to remove the lower shaft that gets attached to the upright.
I do have some spare bits here if needed.
Usually make the crush tube out DOM.

I’m wondering if I really need to remove and replace the lower cross shaft…. I know how it comes out when those pins are “slacked off”, but it seems like I can just clean it up “in situ”, and chase the threads on the ends.

Right now, I’m in tear down and cleanup mode…

Will look for a magnafluxer…

By the way…. Did you know CR Stands for Chicago Rawhide, who invented the leather shaft seal, which was instrumental in sealing things pre-WWII, and beyond?

I didn’t!

Now a part of SKF, they also make the speedy sleeves which it looks like I might need on my inboard drive flanges!
