Valve cover gaskets

How many times can a cork gasket be reused if it was installed with gasket shellac? I need to recheck my valve clearances because things have begun to chatter a bit. This will be the second time that I've had the valve cover off. I guess I need to order a few extras to have on hand anyways.

Ben, you only glued it to the cover, right?? If so, use it until it starts to leak. Avoid overtightening the hold down bolts to get a leaky one to seal.
If you glued it to both the cover and the head, you are well and truly boned. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

The trite answer... Until it starts leaking?

I think I've removed the valve cover on my car 5 or 6 times to adjust valves and such - still not leaking...

And it should not leak with a proper install.

I was able to open and close mine about six times before the gasket started sticking to the head.

I have wanted to try a silicone gasket, but I am going to let that one wait until I put on the alloy cover I have.
