I'd like to adjust the valves on my 61 TR-3, but I'm not sure how to tell when the cylinder I'm working on is at the proper position. Also, can't find a timing mark anywhere, so timing wise, we're just guessing. The car runs very well,so I think close, but I'd like to be sure. Thanks for any ideas.
 
Just watch the rocker arms on the valves. You'll be able to see when the rocker starts to move the valve down and when it ceases to push on the valve. TDC is mid way between.
 
Just use the old "Rule of Nines". When #1 is all the way open, adjust #8. (1+8=9) When #3 is open all the way, do #6, etc.
So simple even I can remember it!

Ok here is the way I have always done it. With all the spark plugs out and the valve cover off Turn the motor over till you get the cylinder you want at the top of its stoke. Then just check to make sure both your intake and exhaust are closed, i.e. the rocker arms both have slack. If so you are at TDC and can set your valves on that cylinder. If you have pressure on the exhaust then turn the motor over a full revolution and you will be at TDC. The trick to this method is making sure you have the cylinder at the very top of its stroke, and not a little before or after.
 
I have used the rule of 9's for about 30 years; very simple way of getting it done. Got it from the Competition Preparation Manual by Kastner. You can take his advice.
