Man would I love a basement to have a shop in during the summer here; it'd make this place <span style="font-style: italic">almost</span> livable. Almost :smile:

Not to get too far off topic, but when is that going to be released?
 
You should be able to buy it sometime this year. The release candidate (beta) is available for free download at Microsoft. It will stop working in June 2010, but it is free. I'm using the 64 bit version, a 3.5 gig download.
 
The RC starts to die in march 2010, then goes out completely in June (I think). Word on the street is it'll be official at least before March, other rumors have it out in late 2009.

Tell ya what - I've put two clean installs on two different laptops. One is a 5 year old P4 machine, the other is a 2ish year-old Toshiba Tecra 12" laptop. Installation was absolutely hands-off and quick on both.

So far the only problem I've had is with my aerial camera software. I use an embedded video object to pull live video from a USB digitizer from the main camera system in the airplane. The video gets displayed in a window with orientation lines overlayed on it. Works great... except in Win 7 the video will not stay in the parent application. No matter what I do the video detaches into it's own window.

There's a lot of talk about running virtual XP under Win 7 so that might be a solution.

Just reading up on it: apparently it's pretty well confirmed that the final version will be on the shelves for the '09 "holiday season".

Reading through the comments on one of the photo forums, apparently several people have put it on laptops to run photo processing apps. XP would struggle along while Win7 runs relatively quick and smooth.
 
"7" will likely be here as a final release sometime around the end of August, if all is right. I hope it's so. Beta is as good as it needs be.

Waaaay true. But I don't think it's a "Penguin killer". C'mon, Greg. There's a whole world out there. Not all of 'em are willin' to pay th' "Microsoft tax".

I'm just messin' with ya. I really doubt that 7 will have any effect on the growth of Linux. There's more to that OS than being cheaper. :yesnod:

Have you tried using different settings in compatibility mode?

I've read that too. The main problem with XP mode (as they are calling it) is the processor. Some Intel chips won't support it, some will. I'll see if I can find that list after work today. I know one computer I have with an 8400 CPU doesn't support it.

I read that too. I'm not sure if my 12" laptop or my Q6600 will support it or not, but I <span style="font-style: italic">know</span> the laptop I'm ordering will :smile:
