I thought as a general rule, you turn the peripherals on after the computer.
 
That's debatable but in my scenario it shouldn't matter. There's no failure of the devices, it's just windows trying to be the hero by trying to identify a device when I don't want it to. The common "fix" is to disable the device it thinks it sees, but because I'm also using a serial->USB converter it tends to ignore it completely too.

The problem occurs whether I plug everything in before or after booting up, but it's more likely to happen if I don't start-up with everything already running. Just more weirdness :smile:
