Update on the ELTO Mmystery

Sorry to keep you guys in suspense. As you may have read in my other post, I've been offline most of the week. I decided to start a new thread to finish this up.
Just before my computer went down, I positively identified what my old motor is.
It is a model 624. 1932 ELTO Super "C". a 25 HP 2 cylinder 2-stroke racing motor. Built specifically for the "C" class racing. After talking to my dad, he confirmed this by saying Grampa bought it all set up on a small boat (Not a hydroplane, as I thought) that looked like a sleek rowboat with a small forward deck. Hopefully we have some pictures in the family archive.
Thought I'd tell ya all what I found.

Re: Update on the ELTO Mmystery

Ben, he may have raced in a "Runabout" class. My father raced Penn Yan and Pabst boats in that class back in the fifties. There are a couple of shots of his Pabst ("What'll You Have" was the boat's name - it was a Pabst Beer advertising slogan of the era) at www.coldplugs.com/cars_misc01.htm near the bottom of the page.

We occasionally used the boat for fishing but it was not very comfortable. It was built very lightly and had no seats. I took a pretty good pounding riding up front.

Re: Update on the ELTO Mmystery

Very cool John. I hope to find a pic of grampas boat soon. If I do I'll defiantly post it. Now I'm on the hunt for parts. I've got no $$$ to buy any yet, but I can start looking. It'll probably take a while.

Re: Update on the ELTO Mmystery

Google Penn Yan boats. They seem to have a pretty good forum dedicated to their "classic" era. Maybe someone there can help you. I think they were made up in your neck of the woods. Not ELTO but maybe some of those old guys have some bits & pieces laying around.

Re: Update on the ELTO Mmystery

Yes, The town of Penn Yan is at the north end of Keuka lake. My brother lives in Geneva, at the north end of Seneca, and Penn Yan is just a hop away. Lovely country, Beautiful boats. Every bit as nice as a vintage Chris Craft. My friends dad used to work for the Penn Yan boat company. They come up for sale every now an again. Not cheap! I need to make it a point to go to the antique boat show in Hammondsport this summer. Stop in at the Glenn Curtiss Museum while I'm there. See some really cool early motorcycles and aircraft. (Glenn Curtiss set the land speed record in 1906 on a V-8 powered motorcycle he designed and built, riding it to a blistering 108 MPH!)

WHAT!?! Ya don't like Lyman boats?!?!

...I'm crushed...

Re: Update on the ELTO Mmystery

You'll get over it Doc....hehehehe
Like Lyman boats?! I do now! I had to look them up to see what they were. The Class "C" racer on the Lyman boat works homepage is probably very close to what grampa had. The engine on the boat in thier picture is the 4 cylinder. but otherwise very close to mine. Cool!
