Up-date: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

You mean like these, but RED?? That would be very bright and will cost you a 24 day cruise. Luckily, they are too big for Wendy's oven.

Paul,
What are you using to degunk everything before you do the Marine Clean/POR15 routine?

Pressure washers are a HUGE help with this stuff as well if you have room...

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

TD,

Bill mentioned steam earlier, which is the ultimate, IMHO, but not very easy to come by. But the pressure washer is the next best thing to get the bulk of the junk off.

A pressure washer is already on the parts list that I sent to Santa. Hopefully I've been good enough!

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Aero,

If you can push Santa a little more, go with the gas engine powered unit. BIG difference if you can swing it. You won't be disappointed either way, but the gas engine is huge for pressure over the electric motors.

Not too bad Tom, considering the age of the car. I'm just glad that we're on the assembly side of the project.

Paul, car looks great! This is one of those jobs thats kinda fun while you're doing it but not something you would want to do again.

Are you going with stock springs and bushing (rubber)?

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Soup,

Stock springs and stock bushing kit (front & rear) from TRF. Actually, it was their Magic Kit for the front suspension with all of the bushings and attaching parts. I figured that the original stock bushings lasted for 34 years, so the next set should get me through till I'm too old or feeble to drive the car.

The hard part was making an order of every other bolt, stud and nut that goes in the front and rear end, so as not be short anything when the time comes to assemble. I thought that I had it all and was still on the phone five times with Dave at TRF to ship something else right away.

And no, I didn't bother to put it into a spread sheet, but if I got all of my invoices together, I probably could.

But then I might have an idea how much this whole project really cost me and that would probably not be a good idea.

Paul,
I too have the Magic Front End kit waiting to go into my 6 once I get the back end done. I've got a good handle on the rear end hardware but if you could give me an idea of what is missing from the front end kit that would be great so I can hopefully avoid a couple of last minute small orders. I've been meaning to do an inventory of my front end parts box, but I've been focusing on the rear end at the moment.

I don't need an exhaustive listing; just an idea of some items to watch out for would be great (I wouldn't want any cost insight to come because of a question I asked <grin>).

Ken

THANKS!
Ken

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Ken,

Check your email. The jpg and pdf files that I made are too big to post here, not because of size, but the quality that I had to use to get the part numbers clear in the invoice.

The cost was about $78 for the needed bolts, studs and nuts.

Could I have bought them cheaper? Probably, but I didn't have the time to search all over so I took the TRF Blue Book, pages 219 & 220 and ordered away.
