Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Getting into the home stretch now. Here are a few sample pics after the wash down with the Marine Clean and after the several combined coats of the Rust Inhibitor and the POR15.

The areas shown were the greasiest as well as the hardest to get at.

I'll add the balance to my web site over the holidays.

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Just a tip for those who ever do something like this. I'm sure that there are a few sharp eyes that have seen a few spots of red, or areas that need touched up. After being under there, they are easily missed when you look at the same thing hour after hour.

We used the camera shots from every angle to give us the extra eyes to see into every nook and cranny. You then look at the pics and get each spot, one at a time until you have them all, then shoot it all again, just to be sure.

That's another reason to do this job when there is no rushing to get it done. Plenty of time insures a much better job and no short cuts.

Below are a few more with the differential out after having new seals and a drain plug added to the bottom. That area was a mess when we started this project.

The area around the booster and PDWA was touched up and Clear coated and the parts are starting to go back on.

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Thanks, TD. It is, but it's the last time it will ever be done on this car.

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

No doubt Paul - I didn't think there was much room for improvement on your car but that all looks nice.

Looks like you are nearly done, yes?

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Instrument panel refinish and gauges are about the last project left after this is done. If I ever get one of those Paul Harvey recommended quartz heaters for my garage, it will happen in the spring.

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Ah, sorry Paul. I was talking about the frame & underside painting.

Are you covered in POR15?

Are you going to get the guages rebuilt or just cleaned?

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Paul - talk about a renaissance. That is fantastic work. Bravo. Brought back memories of cleaning up my engine bay, but you're gazillions of miles ahead of me.

Really looks great.

Tom
PS - if you're going to clean the gauges, take care. The lettering can sometimes easily rub off.

Ask me how I know that, Tom. I experimented with cleaning on a gauge that I bought cheap on ebay. I have a few back ups, just in case.

Oops! My goof. You are correct. There will be nothing left under the car that isn't new or rebuilt, POR15'd or powder coated by the end of next week, including the brake master & booster, lines, cables, calipers, cylinders, axles, rack and exhaust system.

I'll let the next owner worry about anything else when I'm long gone.

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Paul
once again, attention to detail is very good.

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Are you doing this in Your garage?

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Where are you buying your POR15?

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Paul,
What are you using to degunk everything before you do the Marine Clean/POR15 routine? I've just started dismantling my rear suspension and have some MAJOR degunking to do and I don't even want to LOOK at the front end that awaits me.

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Ken, any chance that you would have access to a live steam cleaning machine? Years ago I cleaned my TR3 while in the military at the motor pool shop with their live steam machine. These things will strip every bit of gunk. Short of that, lots of Varsol (Exxon) will work in a tub. I remember when I rebuilt my current car (TR6), the differential was so gunked up that it was not recognizable as such. About 1/2" of gunk over the whole thing. Lots of Varsol and scrapping.

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Paul: A work of art to behold!! You should schedule a
trip to PR during the dead of winter up your way. That
would be an excellent opportunity to complete the frame
for Amos.

KeN: This might help. I recently rebuilt both rear and
front suspensions on my TR6. Decades of lazy P.O. built up
grease, dirt and crud-- well over 1/2" thick.

I purchased 2 gallons of industrial grease remover and
dumped it into a large plastic jug. Also a few spray
bottles of the same stuff. "Doctor Mechanico" in my case.

I heavily sprayed one wheel well at a time and let it soak
overnight. Hooked the garden hose to hot water faucet and
sprayed the grease while using a long handle bristle brush
to knock off chunks of crud. Repeat process a second time.

During the suspension dismantle, I kept the 2 gallon jug
of degreaser next to me. When I removed a part, it went
into the jug and soaked while I was taking off the next
part. Scrubbed the first part pretty clean and put it on a
parts label board. Before/After Photo for example.

Re: Update: Frame stripping and POR15 painting

Hey Paul,

It did not occur to me to powder coat the trailing arms.
My goodness, your TAs look drop dead beautiful.

PS: What is that black material sprayed on the wheel wells
themselves? It looks just great. I want some!!!

Whoever that next owner is, anyone owning that beautiful car of yours will be *very* lucky. And darn sure better take care of it like the current owner!

Don, no, I prefer to stay married through the holidays. It's at Her Majesty's Service, where there is equipment to do the work and the smell doesn't bother anyone.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:] Where are you buying your POR15?
Julian, I bought it from https://www.por15.com/

Dale, the original undercoating was in great shape, so it was washed down with soap and water, dried and sprayed with Rustoleum Chassis Black.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:] What are you using to degunk everything before you do the Marine Clean/POR15 routine?
Ken, the best advice is a combination of the above. The first step is to get the heavy stuff scraped off, in order for the degreaser to penetrate to the metal or painted areas. Whether you do that with hand tools or a steam jenny, is up to you, but the steam is faster. Then soak it down well and walk away for a day. Come back and soak it down again and disappear again.

Then come back and hit it with the steam again and it will peel right off. Now you can see exactly what you have to work with. Wire brushing and scraping will still follow at some point.

That's when you need to decide just how far you're going to push your back, wallet and marriage.

Slight setback today as the right rear axle seal is dripping. I had to get another and the NLA flange will come out to be checked and polished on a lathe if there's a groove in it that we missed.

Plenty more left to do and more pictures tomorrow as the brake lines and front suspension starts to get installed.

I want powder coated red trailing arms!
You think Wendy would notice if I used
her big kitchen oven?
