ummmm what the heck is wrong with my car?

I think that run-on is a problem that is occurring more now with modern gas that it used to in the past with good old leaded fuel.
I notice on my TR3 that when I stop the car if the idle is at 1,000 revs it will run-on when hot. If I blip the throttle and get the idle down to 800rpm it will stop just fine.

NickMorgan, I'll admit I don't know a whole lot about the "older generation". I'd like to have one, I know that.
But that 1k idle dropping to 800 with a blip of the throttle sounds like a Throttle Bypass Valve on a ZS, not seating.
Like I said, I don't know if you even have one, but if you do.....

Did any of you ever drive an early '70's Dodge truck with the slant 6? I drove one for the the company where I worked. That engine would run on for 10 minutes after you shut it down. It was an automatic so the clutch/stall wasn't an option. We hated that truck. The other trick it pulled was to stall when you accelerated. Not only was it annoying but dangerous when crossing a busy road.

The 70's. The 70's weren't exactly the high point of U.S, automotive engineering. Added to that was the Arab Oil Embargo and the gasoline that we had to put up with, ethanol and all.
They say history repeats itself.

Hey pharmacist,...just a note, when this is attached, make certain it's well insulated. Another one of those "Lucas" stories, but I had a flat once, the run-on valve vibrated loose and shorted the entire under hood wiring harness.
This is one of the "separated by a common language" parts, my favorite name for a component on an automobile is the ole "Anti run-on control valve". Only the British...
Take care Bob

Well that is an understatement! However, in all due fairness, the slant 6 was a very good engine.

Exactly what I do with my 63 TR4. I don't know if the linkage is sticky or if it is the nature of the carb. So used to doing it, I have never messed with the linkage to find if that's the problem. Never had the run on problem years ago when gas was real.

Drove a late 60s Valiant with the slant 6 for several years; never even hiccuped. Only died on me once, when the coil wire burned through and fell out of the distributor cap. (MSD 6 ignitons are NOT kind to marginal wires!)
Burned a lot of gas and didn't make much power, but was dead reliable. It was the 70s emission controls that really screwed them up.

No throttle bypass valve on a TR3A; but problems with binding linkage are quite common. The pivots wear until the balls are egg-shaped and bind only at travel extremes. Also not unusual for the front throttle shaft to wear until the throttle plate drags on the carb bore.

Ah, I didn't follow the original acquisition of the car and was unaware of the year. So was unaware of the year

I agree that as a last resort, clutch stalling is workable.

Did it quite a few times on my 1st 6, until I also readjusted the timing and idle speed, actually had the choke cable pulling the linkage up a tad. But that was many, many yarns ago.

Had a 74 where the oil pressure switch one of the terminals was loosening up in the bakelite of the switch. Occasionally it would "run-on".

Wasn't until I got to do the wire wiggle test that I found that one.

Search maybe one day i'll have as much money as you and can afford real american tires, insert eye roll here....08 stands for 2008 as in the year I graduate as in 1 month ago as in I make no money as in i have 70K in college loans and maxed out credit cards.....just cant let it go eh? I promise i'll get your grandmother a good medicare D plan and you free presciptions in the future k?

Did you know that BCF offers a "killfile" function (aka plonk) ?

What happens if you do that? Does the entire thread disappear or just the post or the poster?

So, it is him, I thought so. There couldn't be 2 people like that with a TR6.

Instead of the text of the post, you see a box with the words "You are ignoring this user", along with a link that allows you to see only that post.

Please note that I'm not suggesting this is an appropriate way to deal with whatever issues you may have; just pointing out that it's an option.

We all have good days and bad days; some have more bad days than others. Chronic pain in particular makes people very grouchy. If you don't know that from personal experience, you can count yourself as very lucky !

One other little forum tidbit : Anyone who signs up for email notification gets a record of the original post, no matter how quickly the poster goes back and changes it. Something to think about before you click 'Submit'

'K, folks.

With apologies to the original poster, we're through here.

Maybe another thread?
