U-Joint replacement

Hi all,

My major project for the winter this year is to replace all the universal joints on my 67 4A. Some of them are clanking badly. My question is; While I have the drive shaft and axles out what else should I be looking at?

Thanks, Terry

Hello Terry,

check the sliding splines for wear and grease them well with Moly based grease.

Particularly with the propellor shaft, mark the flanges relative to the tube to minimise any balancing problems.

Hey Terry,...also mark where the zerk fitting is in relation to the other joint. If you get'em 90 degrees off it's impossible to reach the grease fitting once it's assembled.
Don't ask how I know,...it's along sordid story.
Take care Bob

Along with all of the previous advice, I would replace the rubber boots on the half shaft sliding joints, and have the prop shaft balanced. It shouldn't cost much (I think about $20 when I had mine done a few years ago).

Also a good time to check the diff mounts, trailing arm mounts, the rear hubs, and rear brakes.

Make sure you use new (special, thin) nyloc nuts AND Loctite, or look into some of the all-metal locknuts when you re-install the parts.
