Twisted axle?

Tore down the diff tonight for cleaning and pinion seal replacement. Found this:

I guess I need to be shopping for an axle?
 
No need to hurry- those should last until you take it off of the jackstands! :smile:

i bought a nos set for less than $50 on eBay. There's a set on there for $15 ea now depending on disk or wire.

Later year axles got stronger. There is a code on axles so you can tell which would be your preferred choice. Someone will chime in with which ones to look for. Any would be the preference over what you already have. That also may account for why your rear end was noisy. Is the ring gear chewed up?
 
No rear end noise, just the pinion seal was leaking. All the gears look good - pics in my blog.

Prices on ebay are all over the place, I found a pair for $80 that are a local pickup and are from a 1975 MG Midget with BTA 806 and EN17 codes (these are the later stouter ones). New prices are crazy.
 
$80 sounds like top dollar for a set of EN 17.
Often on ebay for $10-20 ea. oldgraynorm usually has then on sale.
With a 948 you don't need anything more exotic than EN17

Thanks for the advice, I held off on the $80 set (which have been re-listed 3 times) and found a pair for $50 shipped. They also turned out to be EN17's

Most likely done by someone using the E brake while tighening the pinion nut.
 
When you replace the pinion seal just be sure to use a torque wrench and don't tighten the pinion nut quite up to the original torque spec's and you should be fine. If you over tighten the nut you will crush the spacer tube farther than spec and end up with a noisy or worse rear diff.

I had a twisted axle that actually snapped off. One side slid right out, but the driver side was stuck in the differential housing since when it twisted/snapped it expanded. I tried various means to pull it out, but in the end the best method was to drill out the center of the axle about 1" then tap threads and use a slide hammer. After I got it tapped in the center, it came right out.

I think the best bet now is to mark the pinion and the nut and be sure not to go past that point. Torque wrench to be sure you are to the right flat maybe.
