Should react pretty much the same way an incandescent will, by getting dimmer. Possibly not quite the same, but close enough.

It doesn't really matter anyway. If the red light is on at all (even dimly), the alternator is not supplying current to the battery. It really doesn't matter if it's output is only a little low (dim light) or a lot low (bright light), the result is the same.

And I think the LED should take care of the other problem, where the alternator is actually putting out a bit more than battery voltage, due to voltage drop through the main diodes, wiring, etc.

CMIIW, those lens are tinted aren't they??
Then you should use white
