Hi,

The clutch of my 1966 Triumph TR4A is worn out... so I will need a replacement.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to replace the clutch from underneath the car? (wihout having to dismantle gearbox tunnel, lower dash, carpets, etc... on the inside)
Or is this only possible from the inside of the car?

(my car doesn't have overdrive, so maybe the gearbox is small enough to be taken out from underneath?)

I hate to break it to you, the only way out is the passenger side unless you take out the steering wheel. No as painful as you think just a lot of unscrewing, Set the rear of the engine blocks up high after taking the drive shaft loose, it helps with pulling it out and putting it back in. Buy the plastic clutch plate alignment tool, until you try it without, you will never understand.

As a side comment, on a Stag it has to come out the bottom. Trust me, it's easier removing the interior!
 
I've removed and replaced two from '66 TR4As. Very satisfying, and easy. Just follow the manual to the letter. A good shop manual; the big blue one as I recall. You'll have to remove the seats, carpets and center console. Amazing how quickly that all happens. The sump must be supported with a jack and block of wood. I also put a transmission jack under the transmission "just in case" it might have fallen from my grasp, which it didn't. Once you've disconnected the diff, drive shaft and and transmission support bracket, and you've pulled the transmission back and turned it to a 45 degree angle it will come out of either side of the car. Use a helper at that point so you don't drop or scratch anything.
 
You could also pull the entire engine and transmission assembly... Don't have to remove the interior for that!
 
Ian, it's possible to all come out but by the time it takes for that you can have the tranny on the floor.

I should mention that a 24 inch extension and deep well socket allows you to take a handful of nuts off at one time, air makes it even quicker and you hardly have even moved.

I too found this 'no big deal'. On a 4A going out thru the passenger side makes sense as the handbrake is centrally located. On my LHD TR4 I found it worthwhile to remove the steering wheel (2 bolts) and go out through the driver's side to avoid the handbrake.

The job is the same - but much easier as you're wrestling with a lot less weight.
