After 15 months deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan, our military returns to the USA and finds THIS at Fort Bragg?

Disgusting filth - and they're living in that? And this is the USA?

c'mon guys - this needs to be stopped. We can't continue having fun and living on borrowed money and accept this for our own people. It's only a matter of time 'til this whole mountain of debt and house of cards completely implodes.

Go to your search engine, type in Fort Bragg / U Tube. Top of the list was the best presentation for me. It was his Dad who took the photos.

This is the most disgusting thing I've seen in a long time. I won't say what I would like to, to the ones responsible for this situation. But, I will let my congressman from SC know my feelings! PJ

By the way, I posted this *not* to start a political "who can we blame!" game. I posted it to keep the issue of choosing priorities on the front burner.

After the scandalous conditions found at Walter Reed, right in our nations' capital, I do not find this surprizing!! TOTALLY OUTRAGEOUS, but not surprizing!! I have two boys in the military and this really angers me!! It seems like these outrageous conditions have been exacerbated by the "privatization" of the basic services provided to our military! E-mails and letters of outrage should be flooding Congress, the Senate and the White House!!!
 
I had a long post prepared & decided not to post it...I also am [censored] but not for the reasons you might think.....remember, I'm a retired colonel who the Army has used to help train units going into combat - & I've been to Ft Braggg a couple of times, once to help with the training of the particular unit about which the video talks.....&, as bad as those photos depict, I know & have seen the other side of the story!

Other than that, I'm staying out of this thread!

(Oh, I was also at Walter Reed for a week - twice - when Jerri's nephew returned from Afghanistan & saw the other side of that story also!)
 
I don't disagree with the premise of this thread BUT - If this thread turns political, even a little bit, it is gone...whether I agree with the political sentiments or not.

If you are in the Military or have loved ones in the Military this is just to say ......... I`m with you and I wish America could/would do better by our soldires in the field and our returning vetrans.

IMO, there have been several failures in the way barracks are run for a building to fall into that state of dismay. Starting with the unit that lives in it. If problems aren't reported, facilities doesn't fix them. If the occupants can't get things fixed/improved by consulting directly with their facilities representative, then they need to take it up their chain of command.

At the same time, facilities should have been more proactive with the proper maintenance and the general appearance of the place while the building was unoccupied. There's no excuse for moldy ceiling tiles, flaking paint, and malfunctioning drainage in a building that units are to reside in.

Whoever is running facilities and housing should know whether or not the new buildings will be online when the units return, and should ensure the buildings that will be inhabited are up to safe living conditions, and the inhabitants should report issues as soon as they're found...

I lived in some old arse buildings in the Marine Corps. Some of which date back to at least WW2. The last one I lived in I felt was close to needing to be condemned or rebuild(the floors were going 'soft'), and to the best of my knowledge it was slated to be condemned within a year after I left. However, none of the buildings I ever lived in fell into that state of disrepair regardless of how old the building was. So, I know for a fact that common living conditions in the military are far from those depicted.

Common bathrooms, laundries, and open squad bays are a non-issue to me. Up-keep of the living quarters is a team effort between the the occupying unit and building management. The occupants need to keep it clean and report issues; management needs to keep it safe and address the reported issues.
 
There has to be more to this story then just what the parent saw, so before I condemn the Army I'll wait to hear what was actually going on.

I am not saying this because I condone the situation, but because once when I was in the service, I too was placed in substandard housing due to circumstances beyond the control of the command.
 
I agree with Nunyas. While serving in the Marine Corps, we had some pretty terrible barracks, but since we were all trained to make due with what we had, we made sure the conditions were acceptable.

Now, with what was posted, it does show that some units are probably not as diligent with policing the area, and keeping things squared away.

I'm not saying that the people that live there are to blame 100% of course, but little problems become larger problems once they are ignored for a span of time.

Hopefully this will open some eyes, and make living conditions for our Military personnel what they deserve.

Hopefully this thread survives, since it is really not a political issue at all, at least in my opinion.
 
I just can't stay quiet....Consider this:

The building was closed while the unit was out-of-country & either a list of items that needed repair wasn't turned in by the unit before they left or the post engineers didn't get to the list or the building was scheduled to be replaced by another building and a command determination was made not to make the repairs because the building was scheduled for replacement.

The unit might have returned earlier than scheduled (I'm not saying anything about rotation schedules about which I know!) & their new building wasn't finished (& there are many new billets under construction at Ft Bragg - I know, I've seen them!) & this was an emergency stop-gap until the unit can get into its new building.

When the unit arrived back at Ft Bragg, they either did not do a new list of items for repair or the post engineers just haven't been able to get to them yet.

There's such a thing in the Army as 'self help'...a soldier turns in to his supply sergeant a list of repairs his room/shower/bath needs (usually a sergeant like the man's son collects them & turns them in or makes the list when he does his welfare & morale inspections)...for those that are considered 'self help' (like a broken toilet lid), the supply sergeant picks up what's needed to make the repair & gives it to the soldier to make the repair.

Oh, in no unit I ever commanded from platoon to company to battalion, would a soldier's room ever be allowed to be as messy as the one in the photo where the soldiers were playing on their computer - especially not a sergeant's!

& Generals & Sergerants Majors do not get to their levels of command by allowing this to occur - there's much more to this than meets the eye!

I think those of us with prior military experience understand that there is more than meets the eye here. My comments come from my understanding of how things were supposed to run based on how it appeared from the low end of the Enlisted side. I've never been under any command where we were allowed to let our quarters get to the state of uncleanliness that's seen in the picture you pointed out.

I did notice that too and had to wonder what was going on there!!! That looked like a college dorm room, not military barracks!!! :crazyeyes:

Where my Marine is stationed (8th & I), they even have to get their civvies inspected before they go off post!!! (Incidentally, Tony, the Commandant's Own will be performing the opening ceremonies on TV prior to the NASCAR Richmond race this Sunday!) :thumbsup:

Man, Mike - you've gotta be proud of that young man!!

The billets today look like college dorms...funriture, etc..& many of the newer ones are setup as 4 different bedrooms sharing 2 baths & 1 large common area with kitchenette.....

But, messy like that one - not on my watch!
