Lets start a new thread.

I have both transmission setting side by side.

Red on the left green on the right.

Red one has shift fork on the passanger side, green has shift fork on the drivers side??

Red one you can not shift, green one you can.

Both have about the same amount of slot in the shafts but you can tell that the red one is dry inside. I mean really dry and the case is really clean. All the gaskets on the red one seem to be fresh with sealer on them. Wonder what's up with this one. Jolly if you read this maybe you can provide a bit of insight.

Comments folks. What's first you all think, remove the side inspection port? And look for what, broken stuff?

Jack

Doc says "Trust me, you'd know a worn layshaft when you saw one."

Can I see this through the port?

Nope... buried down deep in the innards... Laygear is riding on it.

What's with the shift forks on different sides. That even takes a different front cover casting?

I'm not able to answer that... too long since I've had "intimate contact" with a bugeye. Jeff will likely know what the deal is.

Oh my God, well it is Sunday. The red transmission is open, clean as a pin inside, no wear on anything, not even the gears have wear marks on the sides of them, not sure it has ever been run at all. Jolly said it was a gold unit and looks like he was right as usual.

Ok guys now what, why is the fork on the wrong side, I do have a correct front cover on the other (green) transmission. Supose a swap is in order and I am sure new seals would be appropiate in any case?

Got to take the tail (shift) thing off as those rods will not move. Course have the one from the green engine but bet this one will free up with a bit of help.

Comments from you experts please.

Jack

Sounds as if the red box is a "new" unit? Can you get us some photos of the two? I'm scratchin' my head over this... not sure just what you've got there.

Looks as if there's a RHD and a LHD version of the box. Did the "green" one come from the car? running?

Jack, even after looking at the pictures, I'm a bit confused. Are you saying that the side cover is on the opposite side of one tranny?
Jeff

Must have, sure looks like it.

just took bottom plate of of shift lever area, lots of wasps made there home in there, got to take the entire rear shift control caseing off and see why it is frozen, sure glad I have another just in case.

I'm confused as well. Can't see the "green" one's side cover.

No no, not the side cover the end plate in the bell housing that holds the fork for the throw out bearing.

And yes the green one came from a running car, but the inside of the red one is beautiful, not a mark in there.

Okay, Jack. You threw us when you said "shift fork". The shift forks are the brass things inside the trans. You meant "Throwout" fork. Or clutch release lever. My guess is that the green trans is from another car, perhaps a Morris Minor. It's been too long since I had a Minor, and I don't remember which side the slave was on.
Free the red one up and use it. It doesn't look as if the front covers are interchangeable from the pix.
Jeff

Okay! The fork attachment/pivot points. I would ~think~ the front cover plates are interchangeable. Not sure why you've two different application boxes... can you turn the input shaft on the "red" one? I'd say whip the cover off the "green" one, clean it well and put it on the "red" box if it proves to be in as good a condition as you think.

More "concurrent posting".

Would the front covers not be "swap-able" Jeff? I thought it was just a matter of which side the clutch slave was on, as to which front cover was used... Pull 'em off, Jack and SEE if they're patterned the same for the studs.

...nevermind... I now remember bleeding the Sprite clutch. GRRRR.

They may well be interchangeable. I was just on a Minor parts site, and they list different front covers for left and right hand drive cars. My only RHD Sprite is in California, and as much as I'd like to run out and take a look......
