General TR Transmission Problem

While driving slowly I suddenly noticed that I couldn't shift into first or second gear. It was as if the shifter got stuck or was hitting some kind of obstruction. I had a similar issue last year, and thought it went away. But it's back. I can, however, shift into first and second if I slightly lift up on the shifter, somewhat as if I'm going into reverse.

When this last happened I disassembled the shifter and found the anti-rattle button missing. I assumed it had been dislodged and was impeding the shift lever, then dropped out. I no longer think that was the case.

So, my question is whether anyone has an idea here. Do the shift forks get loose or out of line? Would a bad syncro cause the need to pull up on the shifter?

Thanks all.

This doesn't sound like an internal problem with the shifting forks. I'd say your problem is with the shifter and how it interfaces with the shift rods. I'd have the shifter out and have a look. I can't imagine what the problem is, but again I don't think it's internal to the transmission.

I think you're right. I can feel something down in the shifter area. It's got to be something I did wrong with the button or spring, or something else down there, and I just need to find it.
