TR2/3/3A Transmission leaks

The welch plug seals the pressure relief and centre shaft lubricating oil drillings so its just an oil distribution centre under the plug. If you take it out be very careful not to drill into the casting under it.I was thinking you may be able to clean it with carb cleaner and put on a good blob of liquid metal held up with tape until it sets , just a temp fix?

When I changed welsh plugs, I used a small amount of hardening permatex. Just a little on the perimeter of plug or cavity on trans or engines. Never had a leak after, just makes it harder to remove years down the road.

It does not appear that you would need to do any thing besides replace the welch plug. One quick way to remove it is to drill a hole in it and use a dent puller to remove.

You could get into all sorts of trouble here if you don't know what your doing if you drill a hole and put in a self taping screw and it lines up with one of the pressure relief holes and goes into the accumulator piston that will be the end of it, be very careful.

I presume you have not drained the transmission yet. If you have how lose is the sealing washer on the brass plug? Mine almost had to be screwed off the plug. As I have already said I like John used an "O" ring to seal the plug. Got the "O" ring at Ace Hardware.

On the Welch plug your best bet is probable clean and degrease then apply JB weld or similar. It is very tough stuff. Some tape to form it in place as it sets would help.

I got a good "O" ring at NAPA for the brass plug. I will attack the Welch plug today. I am not going to put a screw into the plug after I drill the hole. I have a stop collar on the drill bit so it will only go in about the thickness of the plug. Then i will pry it out with a screw driver.

Now that I have fixed the major leaks, welch plug and brass plug gasket, I have a couple of small leaks that drip with the car sitting still. I have isolated them to the lever and the solenoid cover. According to the Laycock-De-Normanville manual, there should not be any in/out play in the lever, to keep the seals from leaking. Mine goes in/out about 1/8". Following the manual to loosen the shaft bolt and push the parts together, would this stop the leaks? I even thought about putting some gasket sealer on the solenoid cover.

Any suggestions?

Dick
