Transmission Bolt Access

I had a problem one time make sure you slide the disk on the shaft prior to installing it to make sure it slides easily .also hahbor freight sells a cheap tranny jack that works great since its so heavy once its lined up it should slide right in

Whenever I do a clutch, I always make sure the alignment tool goes in and out easily and does not bind, or you will have a problem inserting the trans. If it goes in easily and out easily with no friction, I have never had any problems with the input shaft, on any make of car.

Got the transmission out of the car today- the pressure plate threw a piece which got caught between the bellhousing and the pressure plate, chewing up 3 bolt heads pretty good, but I was able to get them off. Interestingly, the Moss clutch alignment tool did not fit into a new Moss pilot bushing and I ended up having to sand down the alignment tool to fit, after I was sure the tool was the wrong diameter, not the pilot bushing.

When taking the gearshift lever out of the trans, I found two issues that I’m not sure how to rectify. First, the 3/16” pins holding the gearshift in are absent, replaced with two mismatched bolts that seem to be doing little more than plugging the holes in the shifter turret. Moss sells the pins, but their catalog also shows a “pin, locating, gear lever” (#31), but this is unavailable- I’m guessing I should seat the gearshift with two 3/16 pins and discard the bolts in there now?

Also, the bottom of the shifter is shown as chromed in every picture I see, but mine has a rubber sleeve (which has disintegrated) - by looking in a few catalogs it seems my rubber is non-standard and the proper part for a BJ8 is the Moss nylon sleeve (031-259) without use of the circlip (326-170) shown in the drawing, as the circlip seems to only be for the brass fitting and Moss only sells it in a pair with the brass bush. Both the manual and the Moss catalog are unclear on whether the circlip is needed with the nylon bush, however.

So my plan is 1) secure the gearshift with two 3/16 pins, as well as the spring/circlip/washer, throwing out the existing bolts and 2) remove the remains of rubber coating on the bottom of the gearshift and replace with (only) the nylon bushing. Do I have this correct?

Sorry i'm not quite clear what pieces your talking about maybe you can take a few pics and send them to me I have my old tranny out of the car since i'm going with a smitty conversion.i would call john from sports and classics he probably has what you need

You might want to give David at BCS a call on the parts and what they're for and if the originals are not available he will probably have the replacements.

Sorry I'm not being clear. Let me try again- The socket on my gear lever that the gearshift seats into has nothing in it:

According to the workshop drawings (and Moss) it should have a bush (nylon for my BJ8) or maybe a bush and a circlip. Moss drawing is here, and the bush is #97.:

Also, all the pictures of the gearshift lever I see online show a chromed ball at the very bottom that fits into the socket in the picture above, e.g.:

However, my gearshift has a (damaged) rubber coating on the bottom ball that I don't see mentioned or offered anywhere:

Finally, the workshop manual (and the Moss page above) say that the gearshift is held in place by two 3/16" pins, but mine instead has two bolts that aren't functioning well at retaining the gearshift:

Given all the deviations from "normal" I want to make sure I put this back together in a way that will give me smooth operation (I'm not concerned with concours).

So, will replacing the bolts with 3/16" pins and replacing the rubberized coating on my gearshift with a nylon bush get me good operation or do I need more/other parts? thanks for the help.
