Transforming 7 to 8

This is strictly academic since if I brought home another British car at this time my wife would destroy me, BUT....

What is involved in converting a TR7 into a TR8 making it as close to the British incarnation as possible ie Rover engine. I would love an authentic TR8 but I wonder with the availbility of TR7 fixer-uppers if that might not be a more "practical" approach ("practical" and "lbc hobby" don't really go together, I know). What is the availability of transplantable Rover engines? what suspension/drivetrain changes are needed? Is it ultimately cheaper just to find a TR8?

Well, the very basics are, the radiator, mount and fans (although Woody has a good replacement), the engine and the bell house (probably the hardest part to find and most expensive) and the Cross member (Ted makes modified ones that will work). Oh, yes I forgot what most feel is the most import part... the decals. Most 8s had a glove box with an unique decal on.

Honestly, it would probably cost close enough to properly convert a TR7 in to a TR7V8 that you would be money, and driving enjoyment, ahead just buying a TR8. Don't let some of the recent asking prices scare you. They are not all selling for that money yet.

There is a company in the UK that is currently making the conversions for the home market. I have seen the video of their finished product. Their name doesn't come to mind, maybe someone can fill this in. Really sweet. Must be a lack of them over there.

Probably "S&S". There were less than 40 honme market TR8's out of the 27?? or so that are authentic. Making TR7V8's is quite common.

I have been using as a guide the book "A Guide to Racing your Triumph TR7V8" by John Wolfe. It cost me about $20 from the web site.....

www.tr7v8-racing.co.uk

It has sections on the engine, suspension, braking, etc.

That is a very interesting book. Lots of info for $20 too.

I had followed Wolfe for a long time, I was always just about ready to order that book but just never made the jump. Maybe we should start a share library where we can mail books to each other to share the wealth. I would do a temperary trade of my tech manual for the Wolfe book for a week or two

If anybody wants to destroy his TR8 manual I'll put it on a PDF doc
