wtn, seems they dont enforce the seat belt laws in the u.k.! if you can find it on utube watch the "death tunnel" one of the best. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif

You mean this one in Russia!... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

It looks like the roadway is covered with ball bearings! The tandem bus was the best. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif

Is that a puddle of water or sump oil by the curb in the bollards clip? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif

In Manchester, it's definately a puddle of water.

With that many sumps hitting the bollards? I mean, I know it looks like water there and all, I am just surprized that there isn't a large oil slick all over the place there!!

I can assure you that the seat belt laws in the UK are enforced.....it's just that budget cuts have created a shortage of coppers on the streets to carry it out.

As for the "bit exteme" part, people can see that it's for buses or official vehicles only, but rather than take the proper route, they try to cut corners and go through immediately after an approved vehicle. There is even a flashing sign there telling them not to do it!

I found it funny, and I have absolutely no sympathy whatsoever! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Yep....I kinda figured I wasn't getting the whole story.

As long as they are well marked, so as to give fair warning to someone like a lost tourist......Ahem /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif

Never mind the seatbelt, I bet that was a stolen car. Why else would they all run away like that. And no we dont have police stopping people for non-seatbelt wearing, due to lack of resources, besides which, we just love having our speed cameras nowadays !

In Fort Collins, Northern Colorado, we have a set of Red Light cameras on one major intersection and mobile photo radar vans. One of the vans like to park in front of our house in the summer to enjoy the shade from our huge tree.

Roundabouts also seem to be catching on in suburban planning. Which I don't really see as too big of a deal in neighborhoods with low traffic where people can learn to use them.

We had a planner that thought it was a wonderful idea to install a roundabout at a MAJOR traffic junction that gets a lot of through traffic. Especisally OTR Semi-tractor trailer rigs.

If done right it wouldn't be bad. I've been to England several times and have seen/driven through the large roundabouts that handle similar amounts of traffic that the local intersection in question does. Guess what, the big roundabouts in England have stop lights on them.

The genius designer in our local case figured a small tight roundabout would work regardless of the traffic flow. His real aim was to get a large piece of sculpture set into the center of the roundabout. Forunately, the intersection in question is not only city streets but incorporates a State and Federal Highway. So while some city planners thought it was cool, State and Federal planners said NO.

They have had real success with installing traffic circles around malls and outlet centers. With the only downside being an increase in fender benders. Which local authorities say are better than more serious accidents that happen at typical four way intersection.

perhaps i should re-phrase, there not being complied with! i cant believe there are still people that are not able to realize the advantages of this device. most people dont need to have a police man looking down at them to use their seat belt. is that the only time people in the u.k. fallow traffic regulations when the bobbys are around?

Here in New Jersey, traffic circles ("roundabouts") are being phased out.

We just had another circle converted to a standard interesection right down the road from me.

I have some "fond" memories of some of the classic traffic circles (rotaries to the New Englanders) in N.J. They are now installing a few here in our part of Fl. in "traffic calmed" areas! How about jug-handles they haven't phased them out have they? They made sense!!

In Maryland, they call roundabouts Traffic Calming Circles.

Pretty much, yes! I am generalising I know, but a lot of people just don't bother, or think that they know better. A stubborn race, sometimes to our own detriment. There are times when it comes in useful though. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

When I hear about roundabouts,I think
of the Chevy Chase Europeon Vacation movie.
"Look kids..... Big Ben".
