Wedge TR8 doesn't want to go into 2nd and 4th

I replaced the tranny bushings on the 5spd box on the TR8 (or shall I say, I put them in -- they were missing entirely!)

Now the stinker doesn't want to go into 2nd, and sometimes not 4th. If I pull into 2nd and wiggle left-right it'll go into gear with no issues. If I pull down it just grinds. I've tried double clutching -- makes no difference.

When the bushings were missing, it went into gear no problem (it was just messy, since the whole gear selector remote was loose.)

Anyone have any experience with TR7/TR8 5spds to know what might be the fix? Is there an adjustment somewhere? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hey, Sam -

Brad Wilson is here in Clarksville - www.wedgeparts.com. Give him a shout; he may be able to shed some light. Knows his wedgies!

You put them too tight Sammy.
That happened when I did mine, but I just could not go into reverse.

No doubt you should try lossening them. I put in the after market set from Ebay(nylon), and it ground in second. I took them out and put in the cheap rubber ones(victoria), more loosly, and work great! I dont know if they nylon ones would have worked if I loosened them, but it works now and I am not touching it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif

Johnrip,
Did you loosen all four or just the fronts or just the sides?

I talked on the phone to the maker of the bushings. Anatoly actually supplies these to Moss, and he's a very stand-up, nice guy. He really wants to know if this is something that might have happened to other people, and even if there are only a couple of cases, wants to try to help me identify the problem.

He thought that adjusting the 1st/2nd gate stop might help. Problem is that I can't remove the remote unit through the trans tunnel like in TR7s (I don't know if this is just my car, or all TR8s, but it won't come all the way out.) So I might not be able to move the gate stop.

But we'll figure something out!

i noticed that on my tr8 parts car the shifting extension is loose, second and fourth are difficult to get in. Of course, not running and due to sitting may be part of the difficulty, but maybe it is something more noticable on 8's? I never had this problem on my 7's. I'll have the motor and tranny out of my 8 next month and see what's up.

I played with it today, and here's what seems to be happening. It's like the alignment of the gear lever is off. When one pulls into second, it will only engage if the pulls is down and then the lever is moved towards the 4th gear side of the gate. If you pull straight down, it won't engage.

I tried playing with the 1st/2nd shift plate bolts (the top ones on the right side of the trans extension.) It still takes a little black magic to get it into gear.

If anyone can figure this one out, let me know!!!
