TR6 TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritating

OK, I *thought* I had solved my short circuit that was draining the battery BUT after 2 weeks of running fine, it's back! Last time it was the connection for the seatbelt buzzer(driver side), but this time I have no idea. I know I have some kind of draw somewhere, but not sure where to start....is their anything that commonly does this on TR6's?? Someone here said to remove the fuses until the draw goes out and work from there, so I guess thats where I am going to have to start. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

That wouldn't be considered a brown out , would it?

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

I have found the anti-run on switch to stick intermittently and the only way that I caught it was when I heard a loud clicking when starting the car that was unusually loud in the front of the car. It WILL completely drain a fully charged battery overnight.

Jiggle the two wires around on the top of the switch (located at bottom right front of radiator, under vapor cannister). If there is any clicking at all when you touch the wires, you have you suspect under surveillance. Check for a rubbed through or cracked wire.

EDIT: Look at bottom left of the radiator in this picture and you will see the little devil with it's two connectors aimed skyward.

Good luck,

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

What did you do with the seat belt buzzer?

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

I did what all good TR6 owners did thirty years ago, unplug em!

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

Yes, I would consider this a brown out!

And When i got the car the seat buzzer was disconnected, so I reconnected it....then I had a drain, so I disconnected it again, still had a drain....then I reaized the disconnected wires were touching the metal seat mounts, problem solved....Till now.

I think Brosky may have hit the nail on the head with this one! When connecting a fresh battery as soon as both terminals are connected I can hear a loud click coming from the front of the car, just as described. I am going to check that first thing. Thanks alot Paul! But I am still unclear of how to determine if it's the culprit...can I just disconnect it? what do you mean by "touch the wires'?

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

I don't have an anti-runon valve.

Can't you hook some kind of thigamajig to various wires to measure current draw.

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

I found that by jiggling the wires to the switch that it was causing it to stay in the on position. I just disconnected it. You only need it to prevent the car from running on after shutting down on a really hot day. I ran it for a year with no problems.

Oh shoot! I forgot to fix it permanently before body shop started work and I'll bet he hooked it up again when he put everything back together. I know that when I go over Monday, the battery will be dead and he won't have a clue unless he fixed the wire.

See what procrastination will do??

You think my previous post would be good enough for the Knowledge Base ?

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

Thanks again, I am just gunna disconnect the stupid thing and then test yet again for draw...I couldn't even touch it today, I spent the morning messin with the pool, go to start the car, dead again! ugh, I hate that feeling. At least now I' ve got an attack plan for when I get back from the show.
And ya better get to that bodyman before he starts messin with your seat buzzers!

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

Yeah, as soon as you learn to spell THINGAMAJIG correctly!

Just like my highly technical term of "jiggling the wires". Sounds dumb, but it works.

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

That's how we pronounce it down South, Thig-a-ma-jig....

Very similar to Dumaflatchy.

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

Hello R,

do you have a boot or glove box light, these are the common things that cause battery drain if the switch is not correctly adjusted.
The technical way is to disconnect the battery and connect an ammeter, then by process of elimination trace the drain. A circuit diagram will give the most logical way of splitting the various circuits.

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

When broken down on a cold rainy day, sitting along side the road feeling helpless, we affectionately refer to Lucas ammeter testing procedure as "jiggling the wires".

But yes, that is the proper way to go about it. I believe that you would want to disconnect the positive and put the meter in line, then watch readings for high draw?

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

I also permanently bypassed my interior courtesy light, the one that is mounted low right down in front of the shifter.
Actually, I converted this switch to my mechanical cooling fan override switch.

That, plus I eliminated the dashboard dimming switch. Can't see them on bright, why would I want to dim them?

"plus I eliminated the dashboard dimming switch"

Thereby forever defining the term "process of elimination" among TR6 owners worldwide.

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

Well, when I went out to check for draw today there was none! I didn't hear anymore clicking either, but I pulled out that run on control thing, inspected it, cleaned it up and put it all back...It seams ok. Since there was no draw I found another live, disconnected wire near the alternator, that could be a possible suspect...so I taped it up too....Maybe that was it? anyway I my test light is showing no draw so I *hope* my problem is somehow solved....Gotta love the ole prince of darkness.

Re: TR6 Short Circuit....this is getting irritatin

Good news. I'll bet that as long as it's disconnected, you will have no more drain.
