Try brake cleaner. Makes a mess but is does come off after you let it soak and rub it off. You will need to apply, clean and reapply though.

The brake cleaned helped.
But... some of the stuff I thought was sealer is not. It is just a dark area of the metal. Looked like there has been some welding done by the PO.
Can't figure why it is dark though. I thought it was rust but it is solid.

The Por 15 says it is ready to topcoat in 6-8 hours. Is topcoat the same as 2nd coat?

Hi Don,

When POR15 refers to topcoat they mean something on top of the base POR15 such as paint or primer. POR15 is UV sensitive and will change color over time of exposure.

POR15 can be difficult to put anything on top of other than POR15 products. You need to buy either their Tie Coat Primer or their self etching primer and follow the directions carefully.

Hi Don,

Yes, the same product that I used...Mine was grey but I know you can get black, silver etc.

So you have prepped your surface using the marine clean (degreaser) and used the metal ready (etching) and rinsed it off after 20 minutes and it is completly dry.

Brush the POR 15 on. Thin coats are better than thick coats. I think that I only waited about 20 minutes between coats. I usually did 3 or 4 coats.

Now, at the end of the last coat, you have options.

A. Leave it as is.
B. Put another POR15 Product on Top of it (ie Chassis Black or Whitecoat etc.)
C. Prime it with either POR 15 Tie Coat Primer or Self Etching Primer followed by a top coat of any paint color that you like using a regular spray bomb paint of go the full monty and have it professionally sprayed.

If you are doing option B or C, I tend to wait until the POR15 is almost dry to the touch but has some drag when you run your finger down it.

They don't have POR 15 primer at my NAPA. can I use any Etching primer?

That I can't answer Don. I am not sure that even if you called POR15 they would tell you that you could use "regular" self etching primer. It definately does not say in the POR directions that you can use regular primer. It always specified to two POR primer products that I mentioned above.

I am a professional in my craft. I also think that I am one of the best in the area in what I do. I don't blow my own horn and when I am asked if I am any good I like to use the Jim Rockford line about "that's kinda like asking the chef how the steak is " and just smile at them...

The material took a long time to dry (POR product) and I rushed it a little. Had a couple of sags and wasn't as smoothed as I like.
Used an etching primer on it and then a regular filler primmer. Sanded same then used a cleaner on it which ate the primer.
Waited a while resprayed the filler ,sanded vacuumed and then top coated with color.
The sags and some of the other mistakes are showing.

Put your fuel tank back in. Reinstall the trunk board kit, the spare tire and the tire cover with carpet. See any sags or mistakes now? Splendid job Don; you're too hard on yourself.
