today I did the underside, wire brushed and primed

and painted, base coat, clear coat, now curing so I can finish the top side, now for the screw up news, on a whim and pure stupidy, I decided to use some of that great stuff expanding foam to fill the ribs on the underside and when it expanded is warped the top side just enough that I have to resurface the top side again. So if anyone thinks about using that expanding foam to fill spaces either dont or be very sparing on it, I could have not shared my screw up but I did

Sorry to hear that, I could have warned you on that one. I didn't do it (only out of luck!), but it has become club folklore down here of the club member who used that stuff to fill the cavity between his TR3A fenders and the body tub. It wasn't pretty!

Yes I guess I should have run it by the forum first, should have used the stuff approved for automotive use it expands only 3 times its size and cures in 10 minutes, but its 40 bucks for the 2 tube compound and then you have to have the 60 dollar special caulk gun to apply it, and then I decided to leave it alone and not doing more damage, so its back to body filler and block sanding, I decided to paint the underneath yesterday to feel like I got something done and it allowed me to calm down so I didnt get in a rush on the top side, the side that really matters

Your fingers can actually feel irregularities as little as 0.002".

"Indicator coat" for highs/lows after final primer. Done right it's a tedious process!

...and that cheap expand-o-foam is dangerous. :wink:


Most top coat paint will melt it, too. :shocked:

Your hood looks good!

How did you wirebrush the paint out of all the crevices, etc. on the underside? Or is it OK to leave a little good paint and just paint over it?

Once I got all the paint I could get to with the wire brush I sand blasted the nooks and cranies, took a lot of air to blow all that sand out too
