I don't believe your problems are with the engine. They all have to do with things outside of the block. Dropping in a new block won't be the answer, it will only cause problems far beyond the teething problems you are currently experiencing.
Don't change horses mid stream.

I gotta say for all the problems I read about on here your car seems to have a lot of them, Maybe we all need to pitch in, you provide the beds, beer and beef. we all fly down bring parts with us to go over all the electrical engine components plus carbs and we get this thing running again. Maybe in Jan when its cold up here

You could try talking to Eric Sims. He's developing a drop in kit using a CTS motor and tranny. I have his email if you are interested.
 
Thanks alana, but I was hoping there might be
a readily available fit in the wrecking yard.
I have almost zero $$ funds available.

It was just a thought- replacing the entire engine
in one fell swoop. It back to repairs for me, it seems.

Hi Dale - I hope this doesn't come across as out of place but I think it is time for some step-by-step diagnosis.

One item at a time, well documented and examined, to nail down what is happening.

I bet it is one thing that can be isolated and then repaired.

Dale, the old expression is "The Devil is in the details". There is absolutely no doubt that you have gone through every major system on your car, some several times. Just to echo the sentiment already expressed by many others, there are one or two, maybe three or four, detail issues which have collaborated to frustrate you to wits end. To use another expression, perhaps you have lost sight of the forest for the trees, and who can blame you?

Truly, I'd hop a flight down there to help you if my knowledge of TR6's was stronger. It sounds like there are a couple of others who's expertise is excellent who will come. Final cliche here - :smile: - You have built it, let them come!

Nope Don-

T'was just a curiosity question. Nut and bolts I can do
and quite well. I've pulled the tranny myself and installed
new engine mounts myself. I have literally replaced almost every
fastener I could get a wrench onto.

I have no doubt at all that I could strip and remove the Beast's
engine and install a replacement IF the tranny to replacement engine fit.

I have zero $$$ for any fancy V-8 swaps. So, I am back to repair for
months; drive a coupla miles, breakdown, repair for months, drive a coupla miles, endless loop.

This thread can drift away now.

<span style="color: #006600">Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: very soon now the car
is due to have a serious, major breakdown that will again require
complete systems replacement over many months. How do I know this?

It stopped raining this morning, I fired up the beast and ran it's
wheels off for well over an hour at speeds up to 70 mph.

By tomorrow morning it should be dead again. ha, ha, ha!!

Over 25 years of reading about cars and trucks, I've learned that engine swaps are rarely ever cheap or reliable without a cubic dollar injection.

Typically, the effort required to do a swap is the same, regardless of whether it's a V6 or a V8, hence why most swaps are V8's.

The easiest/cheapest way will be to drop in an engne/trans combo and have the driveshaft modified to fit the new trans. Clutch and shifter issues are often why "cheap" swaps are usually automatics. The most reliable swap would be a EFI engine with the entire ECM harness from the doner car grafted in. If done DIY, this can be cheap: buy a wrecked, but still running car, and measure/fabricate as you go. (bear in mind, I know this only in theory from readin, I've never had time/space to attempt it).

fastccarsinc.com sells what is basically a bolt-in V8 swap for MGB, but the unit-body construction of that car lends itself to that. they have done a TR6 V8 as well, but don't describe how they did it.

I feel your pain... trying to keep one of these cars running can be painful... but I still don't think swapping out the engine will gain you much.
