TR6 TR6 Door Stop

Years, no a life time ago, the bracket on the drivers door for the stop broke. Well now I am in the process of fixing it and putting on a new skin to correct other damage on the door.

Well, I fabricated a new bracket, did some compression on the old sheet metal, and test fitted.

Now I know why the old bracket broke.

Here is a shot of how it aligned up. Notice the door bracket is lower then the check strap.

Here it is when placed on the top of the now bent bracket, if fits very well.

Oh, I only used the screw to test the strap, so please, no one get excited about it.

At first I thought it was the door, as years ago it was replaced. But no, it matches the passenger side and fits well into the door frame. Then I took some measurements, and found the check strap was actually mounted in the "A" post 1/4-3/8" higher on the driver's side then on the passenger's.

I guess I will straighten the bracket, fabricate a spacer, and mount it on top where it will not bind.

Here is a shot of the back side of that check strap bracket which I have yet to weld in.

and no, I do not plan to reposition it.

Bummer...

Have any of you noticed this little oddity?

Update,

I decided to fix it after all. Cut a new slot above the old, welded the lower old one close, and now everything is nice and smooth.

Onward with my first attempt at putting on a door skin...

Hello TR6oldtimer,
thanks for posting your topic, I also have a broken door checkstrap mounting bracket, I ordered a new one from rimmer Bros but realized the door skin must come off, can you tell me how the bracket is welded inside the door? Is it just some spot welds the can be drilled out from the outside of the door frame? I couldn’t get your pictures to display.
Thanks,
Dennis
