TR6 TR6 courtesy light wiring help

I am trying to get my courtesy light hooked up in my 69 TR6. I found the purple/white wire going to the courtesy light switch on the passenger side door, but can not find a wire going to the driver side courtesy light switch. Can someone tell me where this wire might be or where it originates from? The PO has done some interesting things with the wiring such as cut wires off to the courtesy light way up into the harness and then retape it. Any tips or information on finding the wire would greatly be appreciated.
Kevin

There should be 2 wires to that and a black wire 2 (also)

I beleive the PW wire is is common to BOTH swithes.

edit: if you look at the driver's and passenger door swithes, you should see one switch that has two PW wires on one contact.

I am not sure if I was clear. I found the P/W wire to the passenger side switch. I found the purple, black, and purple/white wire going to the courtesy light itself (The PO cut the purple and P/W wires half way back in the wiring harness going to the courtesy light and then rewrapped that whole part of the harness - took me a while to figure out he had done that!). What I can't find is the P/W wire going to the driver side switch. My guess is that the PO may have cut the wire and rewrapped that part of the harness like he did on other wires. It is not as simple in this area since there are multiple sections of wiring harness. If I at least knew where the P/W wire originates that goes to the driver side switch, it would narrow down my search. Any tips or suggestions are appreciated.

I think I have this right and I am sure someone will correct me.
The way lights work on these cars is by creating and breaking grounds with the body .
The P/W starts at the light, then goes to the drivers door. then goes across the dash to the pass. door. Easy to fix by just unhooking the old and adding a new wire .Or, my thinking, untaping the old and fixing the problem.
What ever way you choose that's the deal

yes you would be right, the light comes on by opening the door and creating a ground, took me a while to get mine to work and I ended up buying new door switches because my PO took the switches out, heck I ended up rewiring the whole car and now EVERYTHING WORKS,
door lights, tunnel lamp, glove box light, hazzard lights, oil light, PDWA lamps. even the rehostat works after I glass beeded the switch

Happy with my rewire job

Thanks for all the information. Does anyone have access to their car where they can see where the p/w wire comes out of the wiring harness to the driver side switch? If someone could post a pic or describe this it would help me out greatly.
Kevin

Right next to the switch I imagine Kevin, or pretty darn close!

Hold the show....
That wire should be on the dash side of the connector correct????

What do you mean that it should be on the dash side of the connector? One of the problems is that I understand in theory how one switch works with the courtesy light, but do not understand in reality how they are all hooked together. I used a test light to locate where the wire goes into the plug (located on the driver side)from the passenger side, but for the life of me can not find the other wire on the driver side so far. Maybe I am overthinking the whole thing and should just start unwrapping the harness? I will post a picture tonight to show what I am talking about.

Kevin ,right below the door switch there is a connector that "connects" the rear harness to the front. I was trying to remember if the drivers door switch wire was on the dash side of the connector or the rear harness side.

Here is how it works
The light has 12 v. ALL the time via the purple wire. All purple wires are battery fed.
When you open the drivers or pass. door the switch closes and "goes to ground such creating the circuit.
So the P/W wire is the one that creates the circuit on the doors.
Have you pulled back the kick panel carpet on the drivers side?????

Don, the panel is already off. I have a full view of all the wiring.

The tunnel lamp is what I am calling the courtesy light. I had a spare hooked up to test it and it started smoking. I quickly turned off the battery. It was dark, I was tired, and I should have probably stopped that evening. I may have just hooked up a wire incorrectly. I really don't want to try it out my second light until I am sure what the PO did with the other p/w wire to the driver side switch. I guess I could test the light itself. I would guess the black is ground. Would I just hook up the purple to the positive side of the battery?

Kevin

Burned my spare one too.
Here is the connector. Sorry it's so small. Look on this connector on your car. See if there is a P/W wire on it

I have a 69 and found this old thread.I have a wiring diagram but need assistance.
Have no power to door switches, tunnel lamp or trunk/boot lamp. The glove box lamp works fine. The wirings not butchered.
The horns are purple wire also , not hooked up but don't think that has anything to do with the problem.
Any ideas appreciated!

Wondering why a purple comes from the ignition swiitch. The things not working should work ignition on or off. looking at the diagram it shows a purple from fuse box and ignition switch meeting up.

The reason a purple comes off the switch is that it doesn't come off the iggy switch

You should have a brown (always hot) wire feeding the fuse for all the purple wires.
The brown wire originates from a terminal block. See if you can trace the brown/red wire on the alternator to the terminal block.
You may find it on the driver side inner fender...not far from the fuse box.

If you look at that diagram in my first post is shows a purple from a round thing not sure what it is, it intersects with a purple next to the glove box in the diagram. But yes theres no purple on the ignition switch. Mistook the round thing for ignition switch, any idea what that is, might be the ptoblem?
