TR4/4A Tr4a horns problem solved

I like to share my solution .
After many years of not hearing the horn at highway speed, I replaced them with Harbour Tool cheap plastic , similar physically to original except chrome color..all for $ 14.00, including relay and wire lugs. They perform great, maybe even too loud. Each mounts on same bracket. One wired horn alone worked well, and neither worked when connected as the originals ( in parallel ). So, I installed one as originally wired , and the two wires to the second horn ( 12v and ground ) I connected to the new relay coil. From the added relay I fed 12 v to the second horn after bringing this fused second hot wire from the distribution panel. The ground to the horn I connected to its base.

Dan, I have a Momo steering wheel on my 4A, and after a while, the horn would occasionally come on when I turned the wheel. There was a slight grinding noise as well. One day, the horns came on and stayed on, fortunately a block from home!

When I got home and had a good look, I found that the boss of the Momo was too close to the steering column shroud, and the grinding noise was the boss actually taking material off the shroud. It had pieces of swarf on the shroud which made occasional contact with the boss and turned the horns on.

I removed the wheel, cleaned it up and adjusted the steering column on the telescopic section under the bonnet to give more clearance. I can only assume that the rubber joints, which were replaced in The Big Rebuild, had shrunk slightly and allowed the column to move slightly.

DanB,

You are correct, should have said Harbour Freight. Besides the horns, my problem was the steering horn brush rubbing somehow and wearing out too fast. I never solved that problem so I abandoned it and now sound the horn with push button mounted on the dashboard.

I was running a TR6 steering wheel because I like the smaller diameter and my original TR4A steering wheel was broken. I got a different TR4A stock wheel and it is on there now. I haven't tried hooking the horns up since I changed steering wheels. Maybe it will work.....
